Saw Operator (2nd and 3rd Shift)
This role focuses on operating industrial saws to cut metal materials to precise customer specifications in a warehouse environment. The Saw Operator works primarily with aviation-grade and some marine-grade metals, uses band saws and metal saws, and handles materials with forklifts and other material-handling equipment. This position offers 2nd shift (2:00 p.m.–10:30 p.m.) and 3rd shift (10:00 p.m.–6:30 a.m.) opportunities in a hands-on, production-focused setting.
Responsibilities- Operate one or more plate and bar saws as a subject-matter expert in their mechanical operation.
- Cut metals to exact customer cut-to-size specifications using band saws and metal saws.
- Process all orders according to specifications and ensure they are completed accurately and on time.
- Pull and stage material at the saw in preparation for processing.
- Retrieve material from plate racks using a fork truck and safely transport it to the work area.
- Measure material to exact requirements using appropriate measuring tools.
- Record exact specifications and measurements on the appropriate forms for data entry into the computer system.
- Safely and properly operate cranes and fork trucks and apply safe rigging practices when moving materials.
- Assist with packaging outgoing orders and receiving incoming shipments as needed.
- Participate in weekly inventory cycle counts and help maintain accurate inventory records.
- Use precision tools such as tape measures, micrometers, nibblers, and calipers to verify dimensions and quality.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area throughout the shift.
- Follow all safety rules, regulations, and quality standards established for the facility.
- Adhere to all handbook policies and procedures, including operational and safety guidelines.
- Communicate effectively with team members, supervisors, and other departments to support smooth workflow.
- Work independently on assigned tasks while accepting direction and feedback as needed.
- Minimum of 1 year of saw operation experience in aviation or a similar field.
- Minimum of 1+ years of manufacturing or warehouse material handling and forklift experience.
- Two or more years of related experience or training working with saws and/or machinery.
- Experience operating band saws and metal saws to cut metals to specification.
- Ability to run a Metlsaw or similar machine as a core requirement of the position.
- Experience working with aviation-grade metals (2,000 and 7,000 series) and basic familiarity with marine-grade metals (5,000 series) or similar materials.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Basic proficiency with Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, and Outlook.
- Strong ability to use measuring tools such as tape measures, micrometers, nibblers, and calipers.
- Ability to read, interpret, and calculate numbers and data accurately for order specifications.
- Good written and oral communication skills for documenting work and coordinating with others.
- Good organizational, problem-solving, and time management skills in a production environment.
- Ability to work independently on assigned tasks and follow direction when provided.
- Ability to operate forklifts and other material-handling equipment safely and efficiently.
- Capability to perform physically demanding work, including frequent standing, bending, climbing, kneeling, and lifting.
- Strong work ethic and self-motivation, with a focus on quality and safety.
- Ability to maintain positive working relationships with co-workers, customers, and suppliers while operating with high integrity.
Skills & Qualifications
- One or more years of experience in the metals service center industry (preferred).
- Prior experience in a production or manufacturing facility operating machines for at least 6+ months is a strong plus.
- Comfort working with both plate and bar saws in a service center environment.
- Experience using cranes and applying safe rigging techniques for moving heavy materials.
- Ability to participate effectively in inventory cycle counts and basic inventory control processes.
- Comfort working with non-climate-controlled warehouse conditions while maintaining productivity.
