Job Summary and Qualifications

The Labor and Delivery unit delivers approximately 350 babies per month and cares for 700-900 outpatients per month. The focus is on high‑risk labor for women aged 14‑55. The unit has the highest employee engagement scores in the hospital and over 70% of LDR nurses hold national nursing certifications. The unit was remodeled and the project was completed in Spring 2023.

Responsible for the delivery of patient care through the nursing process of assessment, diagnosis, planning, implementation, and evaluation. Directs and coordinates all nursing care for the department‑specific patient population in accordance with the standards of nursing care and practice as defined by Wesley Medical Center and the Kansas Nurse Practice Act. Collaborates with other professional disciplines to ensure effective and efficient patient care delivery and achievement of desired patient outcomes.

Supports the organization vision and mission. Utilizes knowledge of patient’s age and cultural diversity in the provision of patient care. Contributes to the provision of quality nursing care through performance improvement techniques that demonstrate positive outcomes in patient care.

What you will do in this role:

  • Deliver patient‑centered nursing care in accordance with standards of care defined by Wesley Medical Center.
  • Systematically evaluate the quality and effectiveness of nursing practice by participating in quality of care activities to initiate, implement, and sustain process improvements.
  • Acquire and maintain current knowledge in nursing practice and education.
  • Monitor the patient’s progress toward the attainment of outcomes.
  • Contribute to the professional development of peers, colleagues and others.
  • Collaborate with the patient, significant others and health care providers in providing and advocating for patient care.
  • Consider safety and cost effectiveness when delivering patient care.
  • Make decisions and take actions on behalf of patients in an ethical manner.
  • Participate in the improvement of operational functions of the department.
  • Establish and maintain effective and respectful communication in the development of all collaborative relationships.
  • Evaluate and participate in opportunities for outstanding service to all customers and accept responsibility in partnership that is equally respectful to everyone.
  • Demonstrate the ability to apply knowledge of age‑appropriate competencies to the department specific population.
  • Utilize critical thinking and problem‑solving skills to identify, interpret, and access appropriate resources in inpatient specific scenarios.
  • Secure, administer and handle medication according to established guidelines.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned.

What qualifications you will need:

  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support must be obtained within 90 days of employment start date.
  • Basic Cardiac Life Support must be obtained within 30 days of employment start date.
  • Neonate Resuscitation must be obtained within 90 days of employment start date.
  • Registered Nurse (RN).
  • Registered Nurse Diploma, or Bachelor’s Degree, or Associate Degree.
