Role Description

The Deputy role is a full-time, on-site position based in Wichita, KS, responsible for law enforcement duties within Sedgwick County. Day-to-day tasks include patrolling assigned areas, responding to calls for service, conducting traffic enforcement, and performing investigations of criminal activity. Deputies supervise individuals in custody, ensure the safety and security of the jail and community, complete detailed incident reports, and appear in court as required.

The role involves collaborating with other deputies, local agencies, and community members to prevent crime, provide assistance, and uphold county, state, and federal laws. Deputies are expected to maintain professionalism, exercise sound judgment, and follow department policies and procedures.

Qualifications
  • Ability to learn and apply law enforcement procedures, criminal and traffic laws, and department policies.
  • Strong communication skills for interacting with community members, colleagues, and court personnel, both verbally and in writing.
  • Capacity to remain calm, make decisions, and problem-solve effectively in high-pressure or emergency situations.
  • Physical fitness and stamina sufficient for patrol duties, defensive tactics, and emergency response activities.
  • Demonstrated integrity, ethical conduct, and respect for diverse communities and individuals.
  • Basic computer skills for report writing, data entry, and use of law enforcement systems and equipment.
  • Ability to work rotating shifts, weekends, holidays, and overtime as operational needs require.
  • High school diploma or GED; additional education in criminal justice or related fields is beneficial.
  • Eligibility to meet all applicable background checks, licensing, and training requirements for Kansas law enforcement officers.
