Distinguishing Features of Work- This is technical work in the diagnosis, repair, and preventive maintenance of cars, trucks, buses and vehicular equipment.
- Work may involve advising less experienced employees and/or temporarily supervising the shop. Assistance and/or direction are available from a supervisor.
- Requests parts and materials.
- Diagnoses, removes, repairs or rebuilds and replaces engines, transmissions, and other parts and drivetrain components.
- Diagnoses and repairs electrical, drive line, suspension, steering, brakes and air conditioning systems and orders proper parts for the job.
- Maintains written record of work performed.
- Assumes the responsibilities of the supervisor in his/her absence.
- Performs the duties of Bus Mechanic B, Bus Mechanic's Helper or Bus Utility Worker when needed.
- Makes unassisted trade outs and/or on-street repairs to return a vehicle back to the garage or back into service.
- Assumes the responsibilities of Lead Mechanic as needed.
- Designs, fabricates and modifies parts and equipment as needed for proper repair.
- Completion of work assignments requires operation of a vehicle.
- Other related duties may be assigned as needed.
- Thorough knowledge of tools and equipment used in the trade and the ability to use these tools to perform repair work on vehicles/equipment.
- Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions.
- Ability to obtain Type I and II Freon certifications and to obtain EPA 609 certification within one year of hire date.
- Ability to weld using gas or electrical equipment.
- Ability to read, interpret, and apply information contained in technical repair manuals.
- May require the ability to climb onto equipment and make repairs as much as 25 inches in height.
- Ability to tolerate exposure to fluids and solvents used in vehicle repair work.
- Ability to perform continuous manual and physical labor while standing on a cement floor.
- Ability to lift/carry bulky objects weighing up to 75 pounds (any heavier than 75 pounds requires assistance) for distances up to 100 feet.
- Ability to exert up to 100 pounds of pressure using tools that tighten, loosen, or cut.
- Ability to lift, bend, squat, kneel, stoop, and twist as necessary to remove, repair, recondition or replace body, interior, suspension, and drivetrain parts and glass.
- Ability to push/pull with up to 85 pounds of force to maneuver/handle equipment around the work area.
- Ability to maneuver and crawl into confined/tight spaces, and utilize a creeper as necessary to complete work.
- Ability to perform repetitive/sustained forward and overhead work.
- Ability to handle/operate necessary equipment to complete work.
- Ability to work in inclement and extreme weather conditions, including rain, snow, ice, sleet, heat, and humidity.
- Ability to demonstrate safe body mechanics while performing/completing work.
- Ability to perform all above mentioned tasks on an infrequent basis or more frequently.
- Ability to provide one's own hand tools as listed in the maintenance plan and storage cabinet.
- Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with associates.
- Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, orally and in writing.
- Possession of and ability to maintain a valid Kansas Class A or B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) and to acquire Air Brake and Passenger endorsements within two months of hire.
- Ability to obtain EPA 609 certification within one year of hire date.
- An employee shall not pose a direct threat to the health or safety of others in the workplace.
Please note that this position is part of a random drug testing pool, and employees are subject to random drug testing in accordance with company policies and applicable laws.
Offers of employment are contingent upon passing a pre-employment physical, which includes drug screening, and upon satisfactory evaluation of the results of a criminal record check.
This is a safety-sensitive position that requires the most recent two-year drug and alcohol testing records and accident records.
This position may require pre-employment testing at any or all of the following:
Workforce Center, City of Wichita Human Resources Department, or the Transit Department.
