Position: Maintenance Worker (F) - 617 - Buildings

Job Description

This is semiskilled work in the maintenance and repair of buildings, grounds, and equipment. These employees perform independent, semiskilled maintenance tasks or assist skilled workers in the performance of difficult maintenance work. The primary emphasis of the job is on the performance of a variety of tasks which require general mechanical ability rather than a high degree of skill in any particular trade.

Work is supervised and inspected while in process and upon completion by a supervisor.

Monday - Friday 8:00am - 4:30pm

Responsibilities
  • Performs semiskilled building maintenance tasks, such as making minor repairs to chairs, flooring, windows, and sash cords.
  • Performs building and equipment maintenance duties including rough carpentry and plumbing work, plastering and cement work, painting and minor electrical repair work.
  • Makes boxes, forms, and frames, and performs other semiskilled carpentry tasks.
  • May perform some routine custodial duties and/or grounds maintenance tasks, such as operating power mowers, edgers, irrigation equipment, and related devices.
  • Completion of work assignments will require the operation of a vehicle.
  • The examples of work performed are not intended to be all-inclusive. The City of Wichita reserves the right to assign additional duties as needed.
Qualifications
  • Working knowledge of the methods, practices, tools and materials used in maintenance work.
  • Working knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions related to maintenance work.
  • Abilityto interpret and work from rough sketches and penciled layouts.
  • Ability to use hand tools, portable power tools, and equipment needed in building maintenance and repair work.
  • Ability to climb stairs and ladders; to bend, twist, and reach as necessary to repair equipment.
  • Ability to lift and carry bulky items, weighing up to 80 pounds (ability to carry heavier loads with the assistance of another person); load repair equipment and materials onto a hand truck and move where needed.
  • Ability to shovel snow, sand, gravel, asphalt, to or from dump truck bed.
  • Ability to work outdoors when inclement weather conditions exist.
  • Ability to tolerate minor exposure to chemicals used in building maintenance and repair; airborne environmental nuisances associated with machine exhaust and open grounds; and machinery noise (with the use of ear plugs).
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with associates, employees of other Departments, and representatives of other organizations.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to acquire and maintain a valid Kansas driver's license.
  • An employee shall not pose a direct threat to the health or safety of other individuals in the workplace.
Required Experience and Training
  • Six (6) months of experience performing semiskilled building, mechanical, construction or grounds maintenance tasks.
  • A valid Kansas Driver’s license.
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without the need of a sponsorship.
Preferred Experience and Training
  • Six (6) months experience in carpentry, electrical, plumbing, drywall, painting and buildings/grounds work.

Offers of employment will be made contingent upon passing a pre-employment physical, which will include drug screening, and upon satisfactory evaluation of the results of a police records check.

Starting pay for current City employees will be determined by City of Wichita policy or applicable bargaining unit agreement.
