Crewperson 6A-C – Mechanical Systems

Position Function

The Mechanical Systems Crewperson is directly responsible to the Supervisor and is expected to perform assigned duties with minimal supervision while maintaining a high standard of workmanship, efficiency, initiative, and dependability. This position requires advanced knowledge and hands‑on experience in the installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, repair, and preventive maintenance of commercial and institutional HVACR and mechanical systems commonly found in educational facilities.

The Mechanical Systems Crewperson shall possess strong mechanical aptitude and demonstrated experience working with a wide variety of HVACR equipment including, but not limited to:

  • Air Cooled and Water Cooled Chillers
  • Cooling Towers
  • Variable Air Volume (VAV) Systems
  • Variable Refrigerant Flow (VRF/VRV) Systems
  • Rooftop Units (RTUs)
  • Dedicated Outside Air Systems (DOAS)
  • Air Handling Units (AHUs)
  • Unit Ventilators / Unit Vents
  • Hot Water and Steam Boilers
  • Pumps, Motors, and Hydronic Systems
  • Exhaust and Supply Fan Systems
  • Split Systems and Packaged HVACR Equipment
  • Building Automation and Temperature Control Systems
  • Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs)
  • Refrigeration Equipment and Refrigerant Recovery Systems

The employee must demonstrate exceptional skills in diagnosing mechanical and electrical HVACR issues, fabricating and modifying sheet metal ductwork, performing preventative maintenance procedures, replacing mechanical components, and supporting facility‑wide heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration operations.

This position will assist with maintaining indoor air quality, occupant comfort, energy efficiency, and operational reliability throughout district facilities.

Essential Performance Responsibilities
  • Perform troubleshooting, diagnostics, repair, and preventative maintenance on HVACR and mechanical systems including chillers, boilers, RTUs, AHUs, DOAS units, VAV boxes, VRF systems, pumps, unit ventilators, cooling towers, and VFDs
  • Follow lockout/tagout procedures and all district safety policies when servicing mechanical equipment
  • Inspect, maintain, and repair heating and cooling systems in schools and district facilities
  • Replace filters, belts, bearings, motors, compressors, contractors, actuators, valves, sensors, and other HVACR components
  • Troubleshoot low-voltage and line-voltage electrical control systems associated with HVACR equipment including VFDs
  • Perform coil cleaning, boiler maintenance, refrigerant recovery, leak detection, and system charging procedures
  • Troubleshoot hydronic systems, steam systems, chilled water systems, and building automation controls
  • Assist in startup, shutdown, seasonal conversion, and operational testing of HVACR equipment
  • Fabricate, modify, and install sheet metal ductwork and HVACR components as required
  • Utilize refrigerant manifold gauges, recovery machines, vacuum pumps, combustion analyzers, and diagnostic instruments safely and effectively
  • Monitor and maintain proper operation of temperature controls, VAV systems, and building automation systems
  • Utilize computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS), tablets, and digital work order systems to track work orders, preventative maintenance, and equipment history
  • Maintain accurate maintenance records, service logs, and equipment documentation
  • Ensure all work is performed in compliance with district standards, OSHA regulations, EPA refrigerant requirements, and applicable mechanical codes
  • Maintain assigned vehicle, tools, and equipment in a safe and clean operating condition
  • Respond to emergency HVACR/mechanical service calls as needed
  • Work collaboratively with supervisors, coworkers, school personnel, contractors, and vendors to ensure efficient facility operations
  • Accept responsibility for all tools, supplies, and materials assigned
  • Attend required meetings, training sessions, and in-services
  • Demonstrate initiative and the ability to perform assigned tasks with limited supervision
