The Youth Program Intern supports under-school-age and school-aged refugee youth, and their families in a successful adjustment and transition to school, and assists adult refugee youth (up to 24 years old) in their career development and/or higher education opportunities. The Intern assists with program intakes, service planning, and program services for IRC Wichita youth programs. During the school year, the Youth Program Intern will work closely with the Youth Program Coordinator to support students' academic and social emotional progress by assisting with homework, supporting teachers, assisting with the development of parent workshops.

For the adult youth, the intern assists with clerical work as needed in a comprehensive career development program or higher education opportunities. This is an unpaid internship position and consists of at least 10 hours weekly.

Responsibilities include supporting planning educational outings and enrichment activities for program participants, facilitating communication between students, families, and school staff, coordinating transportation logistics for students to activities and workshops, handling clerical tasks such as data entry, filing, scheduling, and other administrative duties as assigned, collaborating with program staff to assess students' and adult youth's needs and adjust support strategies accordingly, conducting outreach to eligible communities to recruit youth to participate in programming, maintaining comprehensive case notes in accordance with standards set by IRC and funding partners, participating in staff development and monthly team meetings, and performing other duties as assigned.

Learning outcomes include developing understanding of educational and social support systems for refugee youth, gaining hands-on experience in program coordination and youth mentorship, and building skills in intercultural communication and community outreach.

Requirements include a high school diploma, current undergraduate or graduate student status, or less than 12 months past graduation, preferably in the fields of Education, Social Work, or related, access to a personal vehicle/reliable transportation, U.S. citizenship or active and compliant visas and work authorization status in the United States, ability to handle sensitive client information confidentially, strong intercultural communication skills, ability to work independently and as a part of a team, adherence to IRC volunteer/intern and workplace policies, and fluency/proficiency in English, both spoken and written.
