Join the Wichita Transit teamDriving with transit as a FULL-TIME Paratransit Van Driver provides the opportunity to enhance the lives and mobility of hundreds of people in the Wichita community who are unable to utilize the traditional bus system. Each day our Van Drivers provide trips between residences and local destinations for employment, doctor appointments, and other daily needs. The Van Driver role involves rider assistance with boarding vans and securing wheelchairs or other mobility aids, while building friendly relationships with regular riders.
Transit relies on a dedicated team of service-oriented Van Drivers who can reliably arrive fit for work on time regardless of weather and traffic conditions.
The driver’s seat is an office with a view. This origin-to-destination service offers a constant variety of routes that show the cityscapes and neighborhoods throughout every part of the city. This is responsible work that involves transporting people from one location to another in the safest manner possible by means of a wheelchair lift-equipped van. This position reports to a Mobility Manager.

Responsibilities (Examples of Work Performed)- Operate the van in the safest manner.
- Provide limited assistance to passengers with wheelchair loading, securing and unloading.
- Write up work order cards for van defects so maintenance can repair the vehicle.
- Ensure that correct fare is collected.
- Other job-related duties may be assigned as needed.
- Ability to read, speak, and write English sufficiently to communicate with the general public, understand traffic signs and signals in English, respond to official inquiries, and make entries on reports and records in a clear and legible manner.
- Knowledge of and ability to work with the four functions of mathematics.
- Ability to read maps, understand and maintain time points and schedules.
- Ability to write in a clear and legible manner; ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with associates, other employees, representatives of other organizations, officials, and the public.
- Ability to answer questions regarding other routes and services; ability to work with a minimum of supervision; ability to exercise sound judgment in emergencies and other unusual situations.
- Knowledge of the geography of the city and names and locations of streets.
- Physical ability: sit up to 60 consecutive minutes for most of a shift; stand and move about for up to 10 minutes per hour; walk up to 10 consecutive minutes up to 50 feet; lift, push or pull a minimum of 50 lbs; push or pull with force up to 50 lbs to up to 10 feet; bend, kneel and squat repetitively for short, sustained periods.
- Ability to perform work functions on various hard surfaces; hand manipulation including fingers, wrist turning, grasping and pinching from occasionally to frequently; occasional reaching forward and to either side; occasional bending and twisting of trunk.
- Valid Kansas Class A or B commercial driver's license (CDL) is preferred. Passenger endorsement is also preferred.
- If you are a Canadian or Mexican citizen, you will be required to have or obtain a CDL from your home country.
- An employee shall not pose a direct threat to the health or safety of other individuals in the workplace.
- Offers of employment are contingent upon passing a pre-employment physical, drug screening, and satisfactory evaluation of the results of a criminal record check, including the past 3 years driving record.
- This is a safety-sensitive position subject to the rules and regulations of the FTA Drug & Alcohol policy for required testing. You will be subject to pre-employment drug & alcohol testing, random testing, and reasonable suspicion testing. You will be required to fully comply with all operational safety rules and regulations established by Wichita Transit.
- This position may require pre-employment testing at any or all of the following:
Workforce Center, City of Wichita Human Resources Department, or the Transit Department.
