How You’ll Make An Impact
As a Benefits Administration Specialist for Health & Welfare Programs, you’ll collaborate with a diverse group of passionate individuals to deliver sustainable solutions to advance mobility, improve wellbeing, and enhance modern life. You will be responsible for the effective administration, communication, and support of the organization’s health and welfare benefits programs and serve as a primary point of contact for employees, retirees, HR partners, and managers of Oxy Chem, a Berkshire Hathaway company.
- Administer day-to-day operations of health and welfare benefit plans, including medical, dental, life insurance, disability, FSA/HSA, COBRA, and retiree benefits, in compliance with ERISA, HIPAA, COBRA, and applicable federal and state regulations.
- Serve as a primary point of contact for employee, retiree, HR, and manager inquiries received via phone, email, or Workday Help cases; provide clear, accurate, and timely guidance.
- Interpret and apply plan documents, summary plan descriptions (SPDs), and administrative manuals to resolve routine and complex benefits issues.
- Process benefit enrollments, terminations, retirements, and family status changes accurately and within established timelines.
- Act as a subject matter expert in Workday related to health and welfare benefits; perform data entry, troubleshoot system issues, and resolve interface or eligibility discrepancies.
- Liaise with benefit vendors and third‑party administrators to resolve issues related to eligibility, claims, billing, COBRA, and retiree coverage.
- Manage and prioritize workload to meet service level standards and deadlines while maintaining a high level of accuracy and confidentiality.
- De‑escalate sensitive or complex employee situations by practicing active listening, empathy, and clear communication of next steps.
- Track, document, and follow up on inquiries and issues to ensure resolution and adherence to service metrics and protocols.
- Conduct benefits research, analyze trends in inquiries or cases, and proactively elevate systemic issues to leadership.
- Support benefits‑related projects such as open enrollment, acquisitions, divestitures, and process improvement initiatives.
- Collaborate with team members and leadership to identify opportunities to enhance benefits processes, tools, and the employee experience.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, related field, or equivalent experience.
- Minimum 3 years of professional level HR experience, preferably in benefits administration.
- Experience working in a shared service/customer service environment is preferred.
- Strong working knowledge of benefits regulations and compliance requirements.
- Proven ability to interpret and apply complex plan documents and policies.
- Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills, with the ability to explain benefits concepts clearly and professionally.
- Demonstrated experience handling confidential information with discretion and integrity.
- Strong organizational, time management, and critical‑thinking skills; ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast‑paced environment.
- High attention to detail and commitment to accuracy.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications; experience with Workday or similar HRIS strongly preferred.
- Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively within a team environment.
