Deputy Sheriff - Per Diem

THIS POSITION WILL REMAIN POSTED UNTIL FILLED

Employees in this classification are Law Enforcement Officers who may be assigned to any division within the Department. Deputies perform duties in accordance with Commonwealth and County laws, receive limited supervision, and must adhere to departmental rules and procedures. Assignments may involve elements of personal danger and require advanced education, training, and experience.

• Safely care for, custody, and control prisoners to and from court and correctional facilities across the Commonwealth, states, federal, and county jurisdiction.
• Provide security for courthouses, county properties, and all persons within county‑owned buildings.
• Serve criminal warrants, civil writs, and Protection Orders, including seizing firearms, weapons, and ammunition, evicting defendants, and taking temporary custody of minors.
• Perform clerical duties related to the Sheriff's Department’s functions.
• Enforce criminal and vehicle statutes, conduct Sheriff and Property sales, and perform levies.
• Investigate and issue or deny licenses to carry firearms, sell firearms, and precious metals; enforce court orders; maintain records and prepare reports.
• Contact attorneys, defendants, applicants, references, and others via multiple communication forms; secure various forms of property; post legal notices; travel inter‑ and intrastate for extraditions.
• Represent the Department at civic and public functions with professionalism; provide assistance to other law‑enforcement agencies when required.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

• Ability to perform each duty proficiently and comply with County and Department policies.
• Effective communication with co‑workers and the public; proficient reading, writing, and speaking in English; knowledge of English grammar, punctuation, and spelling.
• Prepare and submit reports and correspondence; understand detailed oral and written instructions.
• Exercise sound judgment; maintain firearms qualification required by the Sheriff; follow prescribed department procedures and practices.
• Operate computer equipment, fax machines, copiers, keyboards, portable radios, and related office equipment.
• React calmly and quickly to emergency situations; work cooperatively with other law‑enforcement agencies.
• Adhere to all policies and procedures; knowledge of Pennsylvania Criminal, Civil, and Procedural Law.
• Be 21 years of age or older; possess a valid Pennsylvania Driver’s License at the time of job offer; reside within 60 minutes of 200 North River St., Wilkes‑Barre, PA 18711.
• Possess a high school diploma or GED equivalency; be a U.S. citizen; be free from disqualifying criminal convictions.
• Be able to read at no less than the ninth‑grade level; undergo a medical examination to confirm physical fitness, hearing acuity, and absence of debilitating conditions.
• Undergo a background investigation, including criminal history, credit check, interviews with at least three known persons, and driving record verification.
• Maintain a Pennsylvania License to Carry Firearms during and throughout employment.

• Complete the Luzerne County Sheriff’s Department Orientation Training Program.
• Possess prior training as a municipal police officer in Pennsylvania or as a Pennsylvania State Police Officer, documented by certificates and verification letters.
• Participate in an 80‑hour basic training waiver course (40 hours online, 40 hours residential) if applicable.
• Complete Act 2 certification update training annually after initial certification.
• Complete the Department’s Field Training Program.
• Complete Taser, Oleoresin Capsicum (pepper spray), expandable baton, and tactical handcuffing certifications and re‑certifications.
• Qualify with department firearms and long guns in day and dim light conditions in various weather.
• Obtain First Aid, CPR, AED, and Naloxone administration certification and re‑certifications.
• Fulfill any other training or certifications required by the Sheriff.
