POSITION

SUMMARY

The duties and responsibilities of the Heavy-Duty Truck Technician include a variety of repairs to the company’s fleet of commercial trucks and trailers. This position reports directly to the Assistant Fleet Manager.

JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Perform diagnostics, repairs and maintenance on trucks and trailers
  • Knowledgeable in the safe operation of all garage tools, diagnostic equipment, lifts, hoists, and jacking equipment
  • Adhere to manufacturer’s warranty policies and procedures
  • Consistently capable of independently analyzing and safely resolving problems
  • Diagnose and repair mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and pneumatic issues in heavy-duty trucks, trailers, and equipment
  • Perform preventative maintenance, including oil changes, brake adjustments, tire repairs, and fluid checks
  • Conduct detailed inspections of engines, transmissions, steering, suspension, and braking systems
  • Utilize diagnostic tools and software to troubleshoot and identify necessary repairs
  • Perform welding, fabrication, and other mechanical tasks as required
  • Maintain accurate records of repairs, parts usage, and maintenance schedules
  • Adhere to safety standards, environmental regulations, and company policies
  • Respond to emergency roadside service calls when needed
  • Stay current with new technology, tools, and repair techniques in the diesel and heavy equipment industry.
WORKING CONDITIONS
  • Work is performed primarily in a maintenance shop, fleet yard, and occasionally outdoors in varying weather conditions
  • Exposure to noise, grease, oils, diesel fuel, exhaust fumes, chemicals, and cleaning solvents
  • Work may require extended periods of standing, walking, bending, kneeling, crouching, and working in confined spaces
  • Use of hand tools, power tools, diagnostic equipment, lifts, and heavy machinery
  • May require working at heights or underneath vehicles using lifts or creepers
  • Schedule may include evenings, weekends, overtime, and on-call availability to support fleet operations
  • Fast‑paced environment with deadlines related to vehicle uptime and operational demands
  • Required use of personal protective equipment (PPE) including but not limited to safety glasses, gloves, steel‑toe boots, and hearing protection
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Ability to lift, carry, push, and pull up to 50–75 pounds independently; heavier items may require team assistance or mechanical aids
  • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods during the work shift
  • Frequent bending, twisting, squatting, kneeling, reaching, and climbing
  • Manual dexterity required to operate tools, perform fine motor tasks, and complete detailed mechanical repairs
  • Ability to work in tight or awkward positions for extended periods
  • Visual acuity required for inspecting parts, reading gauges, schematics, and diagnostic screens
  • Ability to hear alarms, verbal instructions, and equipment sounds in a noisy environment
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE
  • High school diploma or equivalent; technical school or vocational training preferred.
  • Minimum of 3–5 years of experience as a diesel mechanic (heavy‑duty preferred).
  • Strong knowledge of diesel engines, diagnostics, hydraulics, and electrical systems.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, schematics, and wiring diagrams.
  • Proficient in the use of hand tools, power tools, and diagnostic equipment.
  • CDL license preferred
  • ASE Certification(s) or manufacturer‑specific training a plus.
  • Strong attention to detail, organizational skills, and problem‑solving ability.
  • Physical ability to lift to 75 lbs., stand for long periods, and work in various weather conditions.
