Job Description SummaryThe Department of Chemistry at William & Mary, a public university of the Commonwealth of Virginia, is recruiting a pool of qualified individuals for possible part-time adjunct teaching appointments. For the current academic year, the department anticipates instructional needs in organic and physical chemistry. This pool will remain open to address additional teaching needs that may arise throughout the year.
Job DescriptionRequired Qualifications
- A Master's degree in Chemistry or a closely related field, or equivalent experience and qualifications.
- Teaching expertise and ability to teach compelling courses in Organic and/or Physical Chemistry.
- Ability to teach other lecture and seminar-style courses, and to contribute to other chemistry courses.
- Ability to contribute to lab curriculum.
- A Ph.D. or other appropriate terminal degree, or ABD status, in Chemistry or a related field at the time of appointment (August 10 for fall or January 10 for spring).
- Previous academic teaching experience is desirable.
- This position is also not eligible for work visa sponsorship.
- This is a part-time position restricted to the term to which it is assigned and hired, and is not eligible for benefits.
- The position may require additional hours beyond the typical work week, including occasional evenings, weekends, or overnight work as needed to meet operational requirements.
- As part-time exempt employees, adjuncts are subject to the limitations of the Virginia Manpower Control Program. Total hours worked may not exceed an average of 29 hours per week over a twelve-month period beginning May 1 each year.
- Within Arts & Sciences, adjunct instructional workload limits apply. Total adjunct work hours for part-time employment from May 1 through April 30 may not exceed 1,500 hours, generally equating to up to 14 credit hours for fall/spring and up to 6 for summer, not to exceed 18 credit hours for the year.
- Adjuncts within the College of Arts & Sciences at William & Mary must maintain an in-person presence for the duration of their appointment. Remote teaching opportunities are rare and subject to approval.
- Teaching assigned undergraduate and/or graduate courses depending on unit need.
- Preparing syllabi and course materials.
- Delivering instruction and assessing student learning.
- Holding office hours.
- Fulfilling other instructional duties consistent with departmental needs.
Your application will remain active as long as the pool position is available but no more than one year. After one year, if you are still interested, you must reapply to the most current adjunct advertisement.
