Job DescriptionJob Summary
This position is responsible for providing direct support to schools to ensure the implementation of an effective comprehensive school counseling program; coordinating workshops and staff development activities related to student support programs and providing leadership for professional growth opportunities for school counselors.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Works with PK-12 school counselors to implement a comprehensive school counseling program aligned with state and national standards.
- Assists school counselors with using various data to plan a comprehensive school counseling program.
- Assists the Director of School Counseling and College & Career Readiness in developing and coaching new school counselors.
- Assists the Director of School Counseling and College & Career Readiness in leading and implementing professional learning opportunities for all school counselors.
- Work directly with Virginia Peninsula Community College and designated WJCC school and central office staff to support the development and implementation of dual enrollment programming for students.
- Assists with the planning and delivery of parent workshops and informational sessions, if needed.
- Organize and communicate scholarship information to be shared with schools and identified school staff.
- Provide input regarding appropriate intervention/remediation strategies for students.
- Support the development and implementation of college and career readiness initiatives for students and families across grade levels.
- Coordinate K-12 vertical college and career readiness planning to ensure aligned, developmentally appropriate benchmarks and experiences across elementary, middle, and high school levels.
- Support division wide college and career readiness initiatives aligned with the Profile of a Virginia Graduate to promote postsecondary readiness and student success.
- Assist and collaborate with the Director of School Counseling and College & Career Readiness and designated WJCC school and Central Support staff to support the implementation and development of mental health supports and programming for students as appropriate.
- Update and maintain the program’s website and SharePoint site.
- Support the use of Schoo Links and ensure it is regularly updated and maintained.
- Support the Director of School Counseling and College & Career Readiness in implementing the strategies and initiatives (where applicable) outlined in WJCC’s Strategic Plan, Elevate to ’28.
- Adhere to the ethical standards of state and national school counselor associations.
- Works collaboratively with other members of the College and Career Readiness Team and other departments, as assigned.
- Support schools in student record review and interpretation as needed.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills and/or Abilities Required)
- Counselor certification. Successful school counseling experience in a public‑school setting, 5 years preferred.
- A Master's degree from an accredited college or university with emphasis in school counseling, human growth and development, and/or educational program and policy development. Admin endorsement preferred.
- Demonstrated ability to make independent decisions in accordance with established policies and procedures.
- Demonstrated leadership ability in organizing and working with other individuals or groups.
- Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
- Demonstrated ability to work cooperatively with counselors, teachers, administrators, families and other community representatives.
- Knowledgeable concerning counseling state and national reports, practices and services.
- Strong interpersonal skills required in working with diverse groups.
- Must have initiative and assume responsibility for working productively with a minimum of supervision.
Supervision Received
Performs duties under the supervision of the Director of School Counseling and College & Career Readiness.
Working Conditions and Physical Requirements
Highly diverse and complex duties. Must have high tolerance for change and ability to work on several projects and assignments concurrently. Strong interpersonal skills required in working with diverse groups. Must have initiative and assume responsibility for working productively with a minimum of supervision. Demanding schedule includes morning, evening and weekend meetings.
Position Type: Full-Time
Salary: $81,265 to $137,384 Per Year
