Job Description

This position is responsible for the development, management, and delivery of a comprehensive school counseling program that addresses the academic achievement, social/emotional development, and career development needs of all students in alignment with the American School Counselor Association (ASCA) National Model, ASCA Mindsets & Behaviors for Student Success, and the Standards for School Counseling Programs in Virginia Public Schools.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Support, promote, and communicate the mission, vision, and goals of the school counseling department, aligning them with those of the school and division.
  • Provide counseling core curriculum through classroom instruction or planned group activities to promote knowledge, attitudes, and skills necessary for academic success, college and career readiness, and social/emotional development.
  • Provide ongoing small‑group counseling to students with similar developmental or situational challenges, fostering healthy personal adjustment and coping with complex environments.
  • Facilitate individual counseling sessions that are goal‑focused, short‑term, and aid students in overcoming barriers to success or developing strategies for developmental tasks.
  • Assist students in navigating critical and emergency situations, including recognizing and responding to mental or behavioral health crises with short‑term intervention, referral, and follow‑up.
  • Provide individual student planning services by analyzing abilities, interests, skills, and achievement to help students set immediate and long‑range educational, career, and personal goals, including developing, annually reviewing, and updating Academic Career Plans (Secondary) and leading the annual course request/selection process.
  • Offer developmentally appropriate activities and initiatives to promote post‑secondary readiness for all students, covering college and career awareness, exploration, and planning.
  • Collaborate with school stakeholders to design and implement support services or programs that promote student achievement, attendance, and behavior, advocating for equity and access for all students.
  • Facilitate informational sessions, workshops, or professional development for parents/guardians, faculty/staff, and the school community on student developmental issues.
  • Consult with internal and external professionals to identify and address barriers to student achievement.
  • Make appropriate referrals to community services as needed.
  • Gather and analyze relevant data (process, perception, and outcome) to guide annual program planning, inform practice, and evaluate program impact on student achievement, behavior, and attendance.
  • Apply ethical standards and professional principles, adhering to federal and state law and school/division policies.
  • Participate in division, state, and national professional development activities, integrating learning into practice.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications

Master’s degree with emphasis in School Counseling. Postgraduate Professional/Pupil Personnel Services License with School Counselor endorsement. Working knowledge of appropriate counseling interventions in a school setting, with emphasis on interpersonal relationships, facilitation, brief counseling, group dynamics, family systems, multicultural/cross‑cultural approaches, critical incident intervention, threat assessment protocols, and resources for special school populations. Must possess effective verbal and written communication skills and the ability to establish and maintain positive relationships with students, staff, parents, and the public.

Oversees secretarial staff and student interns where appropriate.

Performs duties under the supervision of the Principal.

Physical Requirements

Highly diverse and complex duties. Requires high tolerance for change, ability to work with frequent interruptions, strong interpersonal skills, initiative, and the capacity to work productively with minimal supervision.
