Walsingham Academy has a full-time position opening for the  school year for a School Counselor.

This position is responsible for the development, management and delivery of a comprehensive school counseling program that addresses the academic achievement, and social/emotional development of all students in grades Pre-K to 7.

Duties and Responsibilities

• Assist students with social/emotional/character building.
• Engage a wide age range of students and provide a full program including individual and group counseling, classroom counseling, and consultation services.
• Aid students in fostering a clear sense of self-awareness.
• Serve in the pivotal role of encouraging and aiding students to utilize their self-awareness to establish well-rounded and ambitious, but realistic and age-appropriate personal, academic, and focused goals.
• Manage student and parent expectations.
• Monitor academic and social progress and plan and implement interventions when necessary.
• Address concerns brought up by parents, teachers, administration, students, and peers in an efficient and professional manner.
• Work collaboratively with colleagues to provide continuity of counseling education and facilitate seamless transition between grades.
• Creative classroom counseling lessons and group sessions that are developmentally appropriate and address ASCA mindsets and behaviors.
• Chair Student Services team meetings and organize and disseminate related documents, for example 504 plans, individualized service plans, and Walsingham accommodation plans.
• If appropriate, guide parents through the Child Study process with WJCC schools to determine what, if any, learning accommodations are recommended and what Walsingham can offer.
• Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills and/or Abilities Required)

Master’s degree with an emphasis in School Counseling. Postgraduate Professional/Pupil Personnel Services License with School Counselor endorsement. Working knowledge of appropriate counseling interventions in a school setting, with special emphasis on the study of interpersonal relationships, facilitative skills, brief counseling, group dynamics and group learning activities, family systems, multi-cultural and cross-cultural helping approaches, critical incident intervention techniques, threat assessment protocol, and educational and community sources for special school populations.

Must possess ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing. Must possess the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff, parents, and the public.

Supervision Received

Performs duties under the supervision of the Lower School Director.

Working Conditions and Physical Requirements

Highly diverse and complex duties. Must have high tolerance for change and the ability to work with frequent interruptions. Strong interpersonal skills required in working with diverse groups of students and staff. Must have initiative and assume responsibility for working productively with a minimum of supervision.
