Job Summary
Perform paraprofessional educational work in assisting teachers and staff in providing developmental services to underprivileged and disabled children enrolled in the County Head Start program. Assist in planning and implementing a daily program aimed at meeting the physical and developmental needs of young children in an assigned group. Supervise children during transportation and school activities, support meal service and clean‑up, and maintain a safe and healthy learning environment.
Key Responsibilities- Assist teachers in planning and carrying out indoor and outdoor educational and recreational activities that promote social, intellectual, physical, and emotional development.
- Provide personal care and support to help children adapt to daily routines such as eating, dressing, and toileting.
- Supervise and ensure the safety of children on buses, field trips, and during classroom attendance.
- Maintain classroom, equipment, and materials in good condition; monitor outdoor play areas for safety hazards.
- Assist with meal and snack service, including set‑up and clean‑up activities.
- Support childcare during parent trainings, which may include evenings and weekends.
- High school diploma or GED.
- 1 to 2 years of experience teaching preschool and/or preadolescent children, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- As of September 30, 2013, possession of a child development associate credential (CDA), enrollment in a CDA credential program to be completed within two years, or an associate or bachelor’s degree in any field, or enrollment in a program leading to such a degree.
- Preferred: valid commercial driver’s license with appropriate endorsements issued by Virginia.
- Initial physical examination including tuberculosis screening and periodic re‑examinations to ensure no significant health risk.
- Successful completion of pre‑employment checks (criminal history and background checks).
- General knowledge of first aid, early childhood learning theories, and principles of early childhood development.
- Effective oral communication skills.
- Ability to work with preschoolers in developmentally appropriate settings.
- Ability to operate equipment such as phonographs, audio/video tape players, and to restrain a child when necessary.
- Physical demands include bending, stooping, standing, walking, occasional running and lifting of children; ability to sit on the floor with children.
Hourly: $14.00 - $16.00
