Job SummaryThe JROTC Army Instructor (AI) is a Warrant Officer or Non-commissioned Officer who assists the Senior Army Instructor (SAI) in planning, delivering, and managing the high school’s JROTC program in accordance with U.S. Department of Defense regulations, service-specific JROTC directives, school board policies, and district procedures. The Army instructor provides leadership and instruction that promotes citizenship, character development, leadership skills, personal responsibility, and academic achievement.
The JROTC Army Instructor supports the overall mission of the school by fostering a positive, inclusive learning environment and by encouraging student engagement, discipline, and respect.
- Delivers JROTC classroom instruction as outlined in the Army JROTC Program of Instruction.
- Assists the SAI in planning, sequencing, and updating lesson plans and unit assessments.
- Maintains an orderly, disciplined, and respectful classroom environment consistent with Army values and school policy.
- Evaluates cadet performance through written assessments, practical exercises, and observable leadership demonstrations.
- Mentors and coaches cadets in developing personal leadership skills, accountability, and team cohesion.
- Supports the Cadet Chain of Command in planning and executing battalion events, ceremonies, and training activities.
- Facilitates physical training (PT) activities in accordance with school wellness and safety guidelines.
- Guides cadets in setting academic, personal fitness, and career/postsecondary goals.
- Assists the SAI in managing JROTC uniforms, equipment, and government property in accordance with Army regulations and school division policy.
- Maintains accurate cadet records, enrollment data, and program documentation required by U.S. Army Cadet Command and the school division.
- Supports the preparation of required program reports and unit self-assessments.
- Assists with program inspections, evaluations, and accreditation processes conducted by U.S. Army Cadet Command.
- Supports and supervises Army JROTC co-curricular activities.
- Accompanies and supervises cadets during field trips, competitions, and off-campus JROTC events.
- Represents the JROTC program at school events, family nights, and community functions.
- Collaborates with school counselors, teachers, and administrators to support cadets’ academic success.
- Participates in required professional development, inspections, and training as mandated by the Army and school division.
- Maintains Instructor certifications and background reverifications for state licensure requirements.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
The JROTC Army Instructor must meet all eligibility requirements established by the U.S. Army Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (JROTC). All candidates must have a Pre-qualification Memo OR Tier1/CNACI Qualification Memo from U.S. Army Cadet Command. The position requires a current certification and successful completion of background checks required by the school division, Virginia, and U.S. Army Cadet Command. Successful instructor candidates must demonstrate the ability to work effectively with high school students, school administrators, faculty, parents, and community partners.
Strong leadership, organizational, communication, and mentoring skills are required. Knowledge of adolescent development, classroom management, and instructional practices is preferred. The instructor candidate must model professionalism, integrity, and ethical conduct consistent with military and school division standards.

To be considered for the Army Instructor position, candidates should be Warrant Officers OR Noncommissioned Officers with a two-year degree OR a high school diploma with credit hours from an accredited college (must obtain a degree within 5 years of hire).
