Assistant Professor of Biology; Microbiology

The Department of Biology at William & Mary, a public university of the Commonwealth of Virginia, seeks applications for a tenure track position at the Assistant Professor level in Microbiology, beginning August 10, 2027. We are interested in individuals with research and teaching expertise in microbiology with emphasis in microbial applications to biotechnology and/or biomedical sciences. Duties include research, teaching, and service to the University.

The applicant is expected to establish and maintain a vibrant externally funded research program that inspires both a highly motivated undergraduate and graduate student body. Applicants should ensure that their proposed research program is well suited to a research environment in which undergraduate students serve as the primary research assistants and laboratory activities are conducted in facilities with biosafety containment levels not exceeding BSL-2.

Teaching expectation is a sophomore-level microbiology course with laboratories, designed for Biology majors and appropriate for students preparing for graduate or professional schools, and another advanced course in the candidate's area of expertise. Teaching expectation is 2 courses per semester.

• Applicants must hold a Ph.D. in microbiology or a related field at the time appointment begins (August 10, 2027).
• Applicants must have completed 18 graduate credit hours in the discipline in which they will teach.
• Postdoctoral experience.
• Successful applicants must possess the skills to teach compelling courses in microbiology and other lecture and seminar-style courses.
• Ability to develop a vibrant, externally funded research program involving undergraduate and graduate students.
• Ability to conduct research within BSL-2 laboratory environments.

• Previous experience in teaching and mentoring successful undergraduate and graduate research is preferred.
