PositionCertified Surgical Assistant I – Full Time (40 hrs) – Evening Shift
OverviewThe Certified Surgical Assistant anticipates the needs of the surgical team and assists the surgeon with tasks such as selecting equipment, setting up tables and positioning equipment, providing retraction for visualization of the surgical site, cauterizing bleeding vessels, suturing and closing incisions, instilling medications, and applying surgical dressings, splints, and casts. In addition to intraoperative duties, the surgical assistant performs preoperative and postoperative duties to better facilitate proper patient care.
The surgical assistant uses effective interdisciplinary communication to facilitate optimal patient outcomes.
- Select and prepare surgical equipment.
- Set up operating tables and position equipment.
- Provide retraction to visualize the surgical site.
- Cauterize bleeding vessels.
- Suture and close incisions.
- Instill medications.
- Apply surgical dressings, splints, and casts.
- Perform preoperative and postoperative patient care activities.
- Use effective interdisciplinary communication to facilitate optimal patient outcomes.
- Trade School Graduate – Surgical Assistant.
- Licensed Surgical Assistant – Virginia.
- Certified Surgical Assistant (CSA) – National Commission for the Certification of Surgical Assistants (NCCSA).
- Certified Surgical First Assistant (CSFA) – National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA).
- Basic Life Support (BLS) – American Heart Association (AHA).
- Minimum 1 year of operating room experience.
- Participation in departmental improvement efforts such as quality improvement projects and conducting in‑services is preferred.
- Proficiency in effective interdisciplinary communication to facilitate optimal patient outcomes (preferred).
