The Supplier Quality Engineer (SQE) is responsible for ensuring that all externally sourced materials, components, and services meet the organization's quality, regulatory, and performance standards. This role partners closely with Supply Chain, Procurement, Manufacturing, and Supplier Quality teams to evaluate supplier capabilities, drive continuous improvement, and mitigate risks across the supply base. The Supplier Quality Engineer plays a critical role in maintaining product integrity, reducing defects, and strengthening supplier relationships.
Key Responsibilities:
Supplier Quality Management
- Evaluate, qualify, and monitor suppliers to ensure compliance with quality, regulatory, and contractual requirements.
- Conduct supplier audits, assessments, and performance reviews.
- Develop and maintain supplier scorecards, KPIs, and risk profiles.
- Collaborate with suppliers to implement corrective and preventive actions (CAPA).
- Establish and maintain incoming inspection criteria, sampling plans, and acceptance standards.
- Lead root cause analysis for incoming material defects and drive containment and long-term corrective actions.
- Partner with receiving, warehouse, and production teams to resolve material quality issues quickly and effectively.
- Identify opportunities to improve supplier processes, reduce variation, and enhance material reliability.
- Support implementation of Lean, Six Sigma, and other quality improvement methodologies.
- Participate in cross-functional initiatives to optimize supply chain quality performance.
- Maintain accurate quality records, audit reports, and supplier documentation.
- Ensure compliance with relevant industry standards (e.g., ISO 9001, AS9100, IATF 16949, or others depending on your industry).
- Support regulatory, customer, and internal audits related to supplier quality.
- Work closely with Procurement to develop sourcing strategies that prioritize quality and reliability.
- Partner with Engineering on supplier process validation, PPAP, FAI, or qualification activities.
- Communicate supplier quality trends, risks, and improvement plans to leadership.
Qualifications:
Required-
- Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Quality, Supply Chain, or related field.
- 3-5 years of experience in supplier quality, manufacturing quality, or supply chain engineering.
- Strong knowledge of quality tools and methodologies (e.g., 8D, FMEA, SPC, root cause analysis).
- Knowledge and understanding of EMS commodity streams such as PCB, cable/wires/harnesses, components (resistors, capacitors, transistors, etc), and machined components (stencils, fixtures, and more) required.
- Ability to interpret engineering drawings, specifications, and technical documentation.
- Excellent communication, problem-solving, and analytical skills.
- Experience working with global suppliers.
- Certifications such as ASQ CQE, Six Sigma Green/Black Belt, or similar.
- Familiarity with PPAP, APQP, or industry-specific quality frameworks.
