6 West is a dynamic and fast-paced medical surgical unit that provides comprehensive care across the full spectrum of patient needs. From short-term observation stays of 24 to 48 hours to extended hospitalizations lasting several weeks, our team delivers high-quality, compassionate care tailored to each individual.

We treat a wide variety of medical conditions affecting all body systems, as well as an array of surgical cases. This diversity makes 6 West an exceptional environment for learning and professional development, offering exposure to a broad range of diagnoses and procedures without being limited to a single specialty.

Our staffing model emphasizes teamwork and collaboration. Each six-patient assignment is supported by a dedicated partnership between a Registered Nurse and a Patient Care Technician, ensuring a holistic and focused approach to caregiving.

About

the Role

As a professional staff nurse on our 6 West acute care unit, you'll be a vital member of the care delivery team. You'll provide compassionate, high-quality care to patients and families, while collaborating with physicians and interdisciplinary teams to achieve the best outcomes.

Key responsibilities include delivering patient-centered care using the nursing process and relationship-based care model, developing and implementing individualized care plans, educating patients and families throughout the care journey, collaborating with peers and leadership to improve care quality and safety, participating in shared governance, quality improvement, and evidence-based practice, serving as a mentor and preceptor to students and new staff, and maintaining a healthy work-life balance and modeling professional accountability.

Qualifications

Education & experience:

bachelor of science in nursing (BSN) preferred, 0–2 years of nursing experience required. Clinical competency: demonstrated knowledge and skills necessary to provide age-appropriate care for patients across the lifespan, ability to assess and interpret patient data to identify age-specific needs and deliver appropriate care in accordance with departmental policies and procedures, strong clinical judgment, critical thinking, analytical, and problem-solving skills. Professional skills: ability to establish and maintain positive, caring relationships with patients, families, and interdisciplinary team members including executives, managers, physicians, and support staff, capable of working effectively in a complex, fast-paced environment with changing priorities and specialized equipment.

Physical requirements:

mobility and visual/manual dexterity, physical stamina for frequent walking, standing, lifting, and positioning of patients. Licensure, certifications, and clearances: current registered nurse (RN) license in the state of practice or a multistate license under the nursing licensure compact (NLC), UPMC-approved national certification preferred, basic life support (BLS) or cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) certification required within 30 days of hire (AHA standards), graduate nurses must pass the licensure exam within 6 months of hire or within one year of graduation (whichever comes first).
