Job Summary
The Heavy Equipment Operator will operate heavy construction equipment such as motor graders, bulldozers, scrapers, compressors, pumps, derricks, shovels, tractors, or front‑end loaders to excavate, move, and grade earth, erect structures, or pour concrete and other hard‑surface pavement. The operator will also repair and maintain equipment and perform routine inspections and preventative maintenance.
Responsibilities- Operate heavy equipment of various sizes and weights used in site or highway construction.
- Follow company and OSHA safety procedures and report problems to project leadership.
- Follow daily procedures and protocols set forth in job orientations and training.
- Perform routine inspection and preventative maintenance on assigned equipment and refer defects to project supervisors.
- Assist in training entry‑level employees to perform maintenance and repair duties as required.
- Identify underground and overhead utilities prior to excavating and review trenching requirements with the superintendent.
- Communicate effectively with all levels of management, employees, external vendors, and business associates.
- Perform other tasks assigned by management.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Six to twelve months of operating construction equipment experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Considerable knowledge of heavy equipment operating principles and ability to operate under varying working conditions.
- Working knowledge of hazards and safety precautions common to heavy equipment operations.
- OSHA
10, First Aid/CPR certification, and ability to follow applicable safety precautions. - Strong reading and comprehension of grade stakes and site plans.
- Good oral and written communication skills.
- Ability to understand, follow, and transmit written and oral instructions.
- Proficiency with basic mathematics (fractions, percentages, ratios, proportions).
- Dependable attendance schedule and consistency as required by management and project requirements.
- Pass a pre‑employment drug test.
- Willingness to travel as needed.
- Minimum age 18.
- Union affiliation or willingness to join the union.
- Ability to work 8‑12 hour days, Monday‑Friday with occasional weekends and be flexible regarding evenings and weekends.
- Perform manual work requiring extensive physical exertion and potential exposure to adverse weather conditions.
- Lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
- May sit, stand, walk, bend knees, stretch arms, stoop, kneel, talk and hear.
- Work environment includes exposure to environmental conditions, loud noises, variable weather, and terrain.
- Hourly rate may vary based on geographic location, skills and experience.
