Job Description

The City of Williston is seeking to hire a Diesel Mechanic to serve the Williston Fire Department. Responsible for the inspection, maintenance, and repair of all Fire Department vehicles, equipment, and ground support equipment. Work involves preventative maintenance, diagnostics, emergency repairs, and recordkeeping to ensure compliance with department requirements.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Respond to fleet and facility maintenance requests.
  • Coordinates, monitors, and performs preventive, predictive and proactive maintenance and repairs of department apparatus and facilities.
  • Perform engine, hydraulic, electrical, brake, suspension, and drivetrain repairs as required.
  • Respond to equipment breakdowns and conducts emergency repairs to minimize downtime.
  • Troubleshoots mechanical and electrical issues using diagnostic tools and software.
  • Determines vehicle, facility, and equipment condition by conducting inspections and diagnostic tests, identifies worn and damaged parts for repairs.
  • Performs tests and inspects vehicles and equipment prior to and following repairs, while maintaining records of services performed and parts installed.
  • Basic knowledge of construction, plumbing and electrical systems.
  • Engages with program to rehabilitate and/or replace facilities and department vehicles and apparatus.
  • Maintains accurate inventory of equipment, tools, and materials.
  • Keep maintenance shop and equipment functional, clean, safe, and organized.
  • Performs snow removal the City of Williston Fire Department facilities as necessary or required.
  • Provide training/instruction to fire and EMS staff on preventative maintenance, reporting requirements, vehicle failure, and general apparatus operations. Participate in internal and external working groups to coordinate maintenance efforts.
  • The ability to use independent judgment in routine and non-routine circumstances, and in critical situations.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong organization skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work both independently and in group settings.
  • Attends training as required or recommended.
  • Ensures ongoing compliance with all applicable local, state, and federal laws and regulations.
  • Perform all work duties and activities in accordance with City policies and procedures.
  • Be physically present in attendance at the worksite.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

    Experience:

    • Must be 18 years of age.
    • Must possess a valid ND Driver's License, or ability to obtain one within six months of hire.
    • High School diploma or equivalent required.
    • Associate's or bachelor's degree is preferred, or a combination of relevant education, training, and experience.
    • 1-3 years of experience as a diesel mechanic or automotive mechanic.
    • 1-3 years of experience of facilities maintenance experience.
    • Knowledge and ability to use critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
    • Knowledge and ability to gather, analyze and distribute data required.
    • Ability to perform the duties of this classification.
    • Prior work experience in diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining vehicle and/or heavy equipment.
    • Knowledge of mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, and small engine systems.
    • Individual must be willing and able to work all shifts, including nights, weekends, & holidays.
