The Rescue Squad Member serves as an on‑call paid volunteer providing emergency response services throughout Kandiyohi County. This position responds to vehicle extrications, land/water/ice search and rescue operations, evacuations, scene safety support, traffic control, emergency medical services assistance, technical rescue, incident command assistance, and disaster response. Members work collaboratively with law enforcement, fire departments, EMS, and Emergency Management to protect life and property during emergency situations.
This is an on‑call paid volunteer position.
- Responds to emergency calls including vehicle extrication, search and rescue (land, water, and ice), evacuations, and disaster response.
- Provides scene safety support, traffic control, and emergency medical services assistance as directed.
- Assists with technical rescue operations and incident command functions.
- Operates rescue equipment, tools, and vehicles in accordance with training and safety standards.
- Participates in disaster preparedness and emergency response activities.
- Attends and actively participates in monthly meetings and required trainings.
- Maintains required certifications, including obtaining and maintaining Emergency Medical Responder (EMR) certification (provided).
- Responds to the Kandiyohi County Rescue Squad Building from work or home within 15 minutes of notification.
- Performs equipment checks, maintenance, and required documentation.
- Performs other duties of a similar nature or level as assigned.
- Must be at least 18 years of age.
- Valid driver’s license required.
- Ability to respond to the Rescue Squad Building within 15 minutes from work or home.
- Must pass a background check and physical examination.
- Must obtain Emergency Medical Responder (EMR) certification (training provided).
- High school diploma or G.E.D. preferred.
- Equivalent combinations of education, training, and experience may be considered.
- Basic emergency response and rescue principles.
- Scene safety and traffic control procedures.
- Emergency medical responder fundamentals.
- Incident command system structure and functions.
- Disaster response and emergency management principles.
- Responding effectively in emergency and high‑stress situations.
- Working collaboratively as part of a team.
- Following written and verbal instructions.
- Operating rescue tools and equipment safely.
- Communicating effectively with emergency personnel and the public.
- Managing time and responding promptly to callouts.
- Ability to reach, stand, walk, bend, kneel, climb, crawl, grasp, lift, carry, push, and pull.
- Ability to lift and carry heavy equipment and assist with patient movement.
- Ability to work in physically demanding and hazardous environments, including exposure to extreme temperatures, water, ice, smoke, loud noises, hazardous materials, and bodily fluids.
- Ability to perform strenuous physical activity during emergency response situations.
- Ability to respond at all hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
