Upper School English Teacher
Tower Hill School seeks to hire a talented and energetic Upper School (Grades 9-12) English teacher to start in August 2026. Our new English teacher will join other dedicated colleagues in a collaborative and stimulating environment. The ideal candidate will have a strong background teaching English and a commitment to fostering skills of confident reading, persuasive writing, and critical thinking in students.
Tower Hill’s English Department is dedicated to teaching students how to articulate fully developed critical opinions, both orally and on paper. The Department also promotes a life-long enjoyment of reading through the study of a variety of genres, helping students understand their own identity in conversation with the diverse world that surrounds them. This is a full-time, benefitted, 10-month position.
Responsibilities
- Teach four sections of English per semester
- Tower Hill offers full year required courses in both 9th and 10th grades, planned in collaborative grade-level teaching teams
- Electives comprise the program for 11th and 12th graders; these include semester courses across genres, historical eras, and themes
- The specific teaching assignment will be based on the background and specialties of the teacher, as well as the needs of the department
- Participate in regular conferences with students, parents and colleagues
- Engage in the design and development of curricular materials
- Serve as an advisor for up to 10 students
- Participate in faculty collaborations and meetings
Assist with student supervision and chaperoning.
Qualifications and Skills- Demonstrated interest in teaching high school aged students, growth mindset and willingness to engage in self-reflective teaching practice
- Bachelor’s degree in English, Education, or related field
- Sensitivity to the developmental stages and well-being of children
- Commitment to broad participation in school life
- Excellent organizational and time management skills
- Commitment to safeguard and promote the welfare of students
- Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively
- Strong communication skills, both verbal and non-verbal
- Enthusiasm for professional growth, academic excellence and creative teaching
- Ability to plan and organize educational content
- Experience in and commitment to the ongoing development and maintenance of an inclusive campus community
- Candidates with experience teaching creative writing are encouraged
