Position Summary:
The Teacher of the Deaf/Hard of Hearing (TOD) provides specialized instructional services and support to students who are deaf or hard of hearing in accordance with their Individualized Education Programs (IEPs). The TOD collaborates with students, families, school personnel, and related service providers to ensure access to the general education curriculum, promote communication development, and support academic, social-emotional, and functional success.

Responsibilities - Duties
  • Provide direct and consultative services to students who are deaf or hard of hearing across educational settings.
  • Assess student needs and develop instructional strategies aligned with IEP goals and state standards.
  • Deliver specialized instruction in areas including language development, self-advocacy, auditory skills, communication skills, and academic content.
  • Adapt instructional materials and classroom environments to ensure accessibility.
  • Monitor student progress and maintain documentation of services and outcomes.
  • Support students in developing self-determination and self-advocacy skills related to hearing loss and communication needs.
  • Participate in multidisciplinary evaluations and reevaluations.
  • Assist in the development, implementation, and monitoring of IEPs.
  • Collect and analyze student performance data to support educational decision-making.
  • Prepare progress reports and maintain accurate special education records in compliance with federal, state, and district requirements.
  • Attend and contribute to IEP, eligibility, and other educational planning meetings
  • Consult with general education teachers, special education staff, administrators, and related service providers regarding accommodations, modifications, and instructional strategies.
  • Collaborate with educational audiologists, speech-language pathologists, interpreters, and other professionals to support student success.
  • Provide training and technical assistance to school staff regarding hearing loss, communication access, and assistive technology.
  • Maintain regular communication with parents and guardians regarding student progress and educational needs.
  • Support the use of hearing assistive technology, including FM/DM systems and classroom amplification systems.
  • Monitor student access to instructional content and communication throughout the school day.
  • Assist staff in implementing accommodations related to hearing loss and communication needs.
  • Collaborate with educational audiologists regarding hearing technology and classroom acoustics
  • Knowledge of child development, language acquisition, and the educational impact of hearing loss.
  • Understanding of IDEA, Section 504, ADA, and related regulations.
  • Ability to conduct assessments and interpret educational data.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and collaboration skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple responsibilities and maintain confidentiality.
  • Proficiency with educational technology and data management systems.
  • Ability to communicate effectively through spoken language, sign language, or other communication modalities as required.
  • Ability to travel between school sites as assigned.
  • Ability to perform the essential functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodations.
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Deaf Education, Special Education, or related field.
  • Valid state certification/licensure as a Teacher of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing.
  • Knowledge of hearing loss, language development, communication modalities, assistive listening technology, and special education laws and regulations.
  • Proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL) preferred.
  • Experience working with students who are deaf or hard of hearing in educational settings preferred.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary teams and families.
