Description:

Wilmington Friends School is a Preschool to 12 Quaker, college preparatory, day school located in Wilmington, Delaware enrolling 700 students.

Responsibilities
  • Teach seventh grade Math (¾) and Computer Science (¼)
  • Serve as a student advisor
  • Contribute in other significant ways to the Wilmington Friends School community (e.g., coach a sport, help with drama productions, run professional development workshops, sponsor an activity)
  • Collaborate with colleagues across disciplines and grade levels
  • Plan and teach interdisciplinary and problem-based units in cooperation with other faculty
  • Incorporate technology into instruction (e.g., Smartboards, online-based mathematics)
  • Demonstrate commitment to varied instructional approaches to meet diverse learning styles
  • Foster students’ mathematical reasoning, problem-solving, and confidence in computation and application
Qualifications
  • Strong coursework and/or experience in teaching mathematics
  • Mathematics enthusiast with ability to communicate appreciation and perspective for mathematics
  • Familiar with current standards for curriculum development, teaching practice, and assessment in mathematics, including National Council of Teachers of Mathematics Standards
  • Familiar with current research and/or practice in teaching and learning mathematics focused on contextualized, hands-on problems
  • Ability to use TI-84 graphing calculator in math lessons
  • Experience teaching or willingness to learn applications and concepts including, but not limited to:
    • Programming/Computational thinking concepts (Scratch, Micro:Bit, Lego Mind storms, Python, Java Script Karel, etc.)
    • Data analysis, data abstraction, algorithmic thinking and computational problem-solving
    • HTML
    • STEM and project-based learning
    • Multi-media production (iMovie, Garage band, Photoshop, etc.)
    • Social media
  • Excellent command of the Macintosh computer environment and OS X
  • Experience with Internet use, searching, and safety
  • Experience with website design
  • Familiar with incorporating technology into instruction (Smartboards, online-based mathematics, etc.)
  • Committed to planning and teaching interdisciplinary and problem-based units
  • Interested in collaborating with colleagues across disciplines and grade levels
  • Awareness of a wide range of techniques and methods to stimulate students and address different learning styles
  • Willing to contribute to the school community through various roles
  • Seeks to serve on a faculty that contributes to school governance
Expectations

The highly-qualified candidate will be able to teach all levels of Math, grades 6-8. Teachers focus on developing students’ positive attitudes toward mathematics and computer science, readiness to problem-solve, confidence and facility in computation and application of math skills, and the ability to organize and manage assignments. Teachers present material in diverse ways to meet different learning styles and foster mathematical and computer science development through discovery methods and direct instruction.
