DEFINITION

The VA (Visual Art) Studio Tech will work primarily in the Visual Arts facility in the Wilson Center building providing technical services to students and to support the operation of studios/labs, while ensuring that a safe and productive working environment is maintained for academic courses. The VA Studio Tech is responsible for maintaining the 2-D (Drawing, Painting, 2-D Design, and Photography) and 3-D (Ceramics, Sculpture) studios/labs.

The tech will respond to the requests of the studio art faculty that are teaching these classes and is responsible for a variety of tasks including preparing studios for classes, organizing and inventorying supplies, cleaning work and storage areas, assisting with EPA compliance and safety procedures, photographing and handling student artwork, working with the darkroom lab, circulating equipment, and other duties as requested by faculty.

Hours will be centered around class time logistics Monday through Friday. The VA Studio Tech will receive ongoing training as part of the position.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED

The VA Studio Tech will receive general supervision from the AFA Program Chair.

The VA Studio Tech will exercise no supervision.

ESSENTIAL AND OTHER IMPORTANT FUNCTIONS STATEMENTS ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Important responsibilities and duties include, but are not limited to, the following:

GENERAL DUTIES
  • Be punctual and professional
  • Support a friendly working environment
  • Work cooperatively with visual art faculty to coordinate shared facility areas and supplies
TECHNICAL DUTIES
  • Monitor and facilitate technical operation of studios while ensuring a safe work environment, including during open studio and lab hours
  • Work in facilities including, but not limited to, sculpture studio, printmaking studio, photo lab, darkroom, painting and drawing studios.
  • Provide appropriate proactive and creative support
  • Oversee open studio/lab hours
  • Assist with installation of student projects on hallway display panels
  • Assist with classes taught in assigned spaces
  • Assist with room and equipment setup for classes
  • Organize and maintain tools and equipment in studios
  • Maintain material and supply inventories for courses
  • Schedule and receive deliveries of bulk art materials
  • Work with faculty and departmental leadership on projects in the CFPA as needed
  • Cleaning work and storage areas
SAFETY DUTIES
  • Remain alert to safety aspects of studio material and equipment
  • Assist students with handling material and equipment during courses

The successful candidate will maintain and participate in the continued development of the studios and assist students during class as well as during studio/lab hours.

The VA Studio Tech will also need to perform other related responsibilities and duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS
  • Completion of a minimum of two semesters of college-level visual art courses
  • Candidates should demonstrate their experience coordinating and supporting varied visual art facilities, including 2-D/3-D art studios, photography labs, and darkroom
KNOWLEDGE OF
  • Visual art
  • Course content, equipment, supplies, reference materials, and safety procedures appropriate to the assigned spaces
  • Operational techniques for visual art studio and photo lab equipment
  • Safety practices in working with art studio and photo lab tools and supplies
  • Basic principles and procedures of record keeping
OTHER
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain and coordinate course material and studio/lab material
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with students, faculty, and staff
  • Ability to oversee the safe storage and proper documentation of hazardous materials in all studio/lab areas
  • Ability to work comfortably with technology
  • Proficiency with commonly used computer programs
  • Ability to work independently and to take initiative with new projects
  • Ability to interpret and apply CFCC goals, objectives, policies, procedures, rules, and regulations where applicable
  • Ability to communicate clearly and respectfully, both verbally and in writing
  • Ability to answer questions from students and others
  • Ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions
  • Ability to maintain accurate records
