Elementary And/Or Secondary English Learners Teacher

Job Goal:
To provide elementary and/or secondary English Learners specialized instruction for the purposes of developing the students' ability to effectively perform courses of study in English and acquire the English language.

Job Qualifications:

  • Most hold a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in Education, Masters preferred.
  • Must possess or be eligible for Certification in the State of Delaware for Elementary Education K-6.
  • Must possess or be eligible for Certification in the State of Delaware for Teacher to Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) or Teacher of English Learners (TOEL).
  • Must have experience working with students on the fundamentals of grammar, vocabulary, writing, reading, speaking and listening.
  • Teaching experience in elementary or secondary curriculum and instruction, required.
  • Bilingual or multilingual recommended but not required.

Essential Functions:

  • Plans, organizes, and provides instruction in English in the Core Curriculum Content Standards and State of Delaware English Language Proficiency Standards.
  • Instruction must be consistent and coordinated with the district's instructional program so that students meet and exceed learning targets and the requirements outlined in the state and federal law.
  • Collaborate with classroom teachers of elementary or secondary ESL students in the regular classroom.
  • Develops and delivers lesson plans utilizing a broad range of appropriate differentiated techniques and strategies addressing all aspects of communication that develop each student's ability to read, write, speak, and listen in content areas at levels that ensure learners meet or exceed learning targets, and allow English learners to meaningfully access the district's instructional program.
  • Adapt instructional materials as necessary to meet the needs of ELLs.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the sociocultural variables in the instructional setting.
  • Participate in the selection and development of curricular materials for sheltered instruction classes (e.g., create model lessons).
  • Provide academic support services to identified ELL students in an inclusion (push-in) model.
  • Facilitates frequent and effective home-school communication by coordinating and/or attending: conferences; written communication; parent trainings and other meetings/events; and administrative support for childcare, interpreting, translations, etc.
  • Assist with task of keeping accurate files and records of district wide ESL students.
  • Evaluate and identify ELLs and assist with state test administration, and selection of accommodations.
  • Participate in the implementation of the Sheltered Instruction Model by providing high-quality, on-going staff development to teachers.
  • Collaborate with the Title III ESL Department to plan and deliver staff development that includes WIDA standards and second language acquisition.
  • Attends Special Ed and ELL student meetings as well as serves on building or district committees, and attends staff meetings as may be requested to help make informed educational decisions based on student's needs.
  • Attend appropriate district staff development and approved state professional conferences to stay abreast of current issues.

Other Requirements:

  • Must be able to work collaboratively within and across departments.
  • Must be able to implement and monitor best practices in second language acquisition.
  • Must be proficient in the use of Microsoft Office products (e.g., Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Must value diversity and possess the ability to develop programs to meet the needs linguistically and culturally diverse populations.
  • Must have excellent written and verbal skills.
  • Strong communication skills.
  • Experience in working with adults and children.
  • The ability to coordinate and work effectively with staff, students, and parents.
  • Experience in implementing professional development preferred.
