Elementary Special Education Teacher

We are seeking a dedicated and compassionate Elementary Special Education Teacher to support a behavioral program serving students in grades 3–5. This program provides a highly structured, therapeutic learning environment for students who have experienced significant behavioral challenges in their home schools and require a more intensive setting to support their academic, behavioral, and social-emotional growth. Students are referred from multiple school districts, and the majority receive special education services through an Individualized Education Program (IEP).

The teacher will provide standards-based, specially designed instruction; implement IEP accommodations; utilize evidence-based behavioral interventions; and foster a safe, supportive classroom environment that promotes student success. While the teacher may not serve as the case manager for IEP development, they will play an integral role in implementing IEPs, monitoring student progress, collaborating with multidisciplinary teams and home districts, and supporting students as they develop the skills necessary to successfully transition to less restrictive educational settings.

The ideal candidate is flexible, collaborative, highly skilled in behavior management, and passionate about helping students overcome barriers to learning and achieve meaningful academic and behavioral growth.

Qualification Requirements:

  • Must hold or be eligible for teaching certification in elementary education in the State of Delaware
  • Special Education certification preferred
  • Experience working in alternative, behavioral, or specialized educational settings preferred
  • Strong understanding of accommodations, modifications, and behavioral supports
  • Ability to collaborate within a multidisciplinary team
  • Excellent communication, problem-solving, and organizational skills
  • Committed to trauma-informed and relationship-based practices
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain a calm, structured, and student-centered classroom

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provide direct instruction in core academic subjects (literacy, math, etc.) in alignment with district and state standards
  • Implement accommodations and instructional strategies outlined in students' IEPs to support access to the general curriculum
  • Maintain a structured, consistent classroom environment focused on behavioral and emotional regulation
  • Collaborate with behavior interventionists, counselors, and other support staff to address students' social-emotional and behavioral goals
  • Monitor and document student progress toward both academic and behavioral targets
  • Participate in IEP, eligibility, and team meetings to provide input on student performance and classroom accommodations
  • Develop and deliver behaviorally appropriate lessons and routines that support social skills, emotional regulation, and executive functioning
  • Utilize positive behavior supports, including reinforcement systems, clear routines, and individual behavior plans
  • Communicate regularly with sending district staff, related service providers, and families
  • Work closely with program leadership and support staff to ensure fidelity of program implementation
  • Maintain compliance with all relevant policies, procedures, and documentation requirements
  • Attend required trainings and engage in ongoing professional development related to behavioral interventions, trauma-informed practices, and special education
  • Ensure a safe, respectful, and supportive classroom environment where all students can learn and grow
  • Other duties as assigned

Employment is contingent upon successful completion of all required background checks and clearances.
