Position: Senior Manager, Business Incentives Group

Job Description

A Tax Senior Manager, Business Incentives Group (BIG) in BDO’s Specialized Tax Services (STS) is charged with helping clients identify, document, and support tax positions related to their BIG tax credits and deductions. The role is a critical member of the STS BIG leadership team, participates in marketing and business development, and drives process improvement and team‑building initiatives, while maintaining client relationships and providing guidance to team members.

Responsibilities
  • Tax Specialization
    • Maintain and develop an in‑depth understanding of the technical and practical issues and opportunities regarding BIG tax benefits
    • Identify client opportunities and issues related to tax specializations other than BIG
    • Develop, recommend, and implement solutions to provide clients maximum tax benefits
    • Stay informed of new legal and factual developments affecting clients’ BIG tax positions and communicate effective approaches to partners
    • Identify process improvements regarding the processes of identifying, documenting, and supporting BIG benefits on exam and at appeals
    • Identify non‑BIG tax and business opportunities for clients and prospects
  • Tax Controversy
    • Effectively represent clients before tax authorities
    • Respond to inquiries from federal and state tax authorities regarding BIG tax issues and questions
  • ASC 740‑10
    • Understand and apply industry and firm FAS 109 and FIN
      48 standards
    • Recognize, measure, and document the financial benefit of BIG positions
    • Identify complex situations requiring research, outline issues, and conduct appropriate investigation
    • Confirm accuracy of facts and sources before composing detailed research reports
    • Prepare studies of tax implications and outline alternative courses of action to clients
    • Compose effective research memos and develop presentations for marketing and sales opportunities
  • Tax Compliance
    • Ensure clients comply with applicable authorities
    • Identify options for minimizing client tax and reporting burdens
    • Identify “gray areas” and communicate related risks to partners
    • Conduct detailed reviews of work papers and tax returns to identify basic, complex and advanced issues
    • Ensure firm risk management and tax quality control standards and protocols are met
    • Communicate with clients and appropriate Core Tax Services, Assurance, and Consulting personnel regarding any issues
  • Strategy Development
    • Develop new or improved ideas and strategies to advance the positions of clients, the firm or firm personnel
    • Suggest marketing approaches for new client acquisition
  • Other duties as required
Supervisory Responsibilities
  • Effectively supervise and review the day‑to‑day work of STS BIG Managers, Senior Associates, Associates, and Interns
  • Ensure STS BIG Managers, Senior Associates, Associates, and Interns are well trained in all required areas
  • Evaluate performance and assist in developing goals and objectives to enhance professional development
  • Deliver periodic performance feedback and complete constructive performance evaluations
  • Act as career advisor to STS BIG Managers, Senior Associates, Associates, and Interns
Education
  • Bachelor’s degree, required
  • Degree in accounting, tax, or finance, preferred
Experience
  • Seven (7) or more years of prior experience, required
  • Six (6) or more years’ experience in BIG tax consulting, required
  • Prior experience supervising tax consulting professionals, required
  • Prior experience preparing and/or reviewing tax provisions, preferred
  • Prior experience with corporate taxation, consolidations, and partnerships, preferred
License/Certifications
  • CPA, preferred
Software
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office, especially Excel and Word
  • Experience with tax‑related software and research databases such as Caseware, GoSystems, and other comparable programs
Other Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Knowledge, skills, and abilities in the BIG tax area commensurate with the level of experience required above
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Superior analytical and research skills
  • Solid organizational skills, especially ability to meet project deadlines with a focus on details
