The Echocardiography Lab Manager serves as a Health Care Professional with primary responsibility for leadership and management of patient focused echocardiography services providing high quality patient care within a pre-determined budget. Responsible for the day-to-day operations of echocardiography services. Responsible for participating in departmental and hospital programs for quality assessment and improvement, identifying opportunities to improve services, making recommendations and implementing actions as appropriate and consistent with the goals of the Nemours Foundation.

Hires, supervises and evaluates the staff of the echocardiography service. Additional responsibilities include scheduling patients, patient care activities, performance of the Echo cardiographic procedures (2-3 days per week subject to study volume/type demand) and participation in call coverage.

Essential Functions:
  • Complete echo cardiographic examinations on inpatients and outpatients; including 2D, M-Mode and Doppler studied: transthoracic, fetal, transesophageal and intracardiac under the direction of the medical director of the echocardiography service. Provides age and developmental appropriate care to infants, children and adolescents. Provides clinical assistance to cardiologists. Responds to and provides direction during crises and emergency situations.
  • Assumes responsibility for the coordination and integration of interdepartmental and intradepartmental services. Provides leadership and direction to patient care team members in accordance with organizational goals. Responsible for the patient care delivered by sonographers and provides advice and guidance to other health care providers. Makes sound decisions, implements strategies and evaluates outcomes. Provides management and leadership of other patient care units within the Cardiac Center when necessary.

    Supports attendance at continuing education programs/seminars within budgetary constraints.
  • Assists in the budgeting process and cost accounting procedures for echocardiography services. Supervises coordination of equipment and supply purchase within the echocardiography service. Negotiates equipment and supply pricing. Responsible for the economical utilization and maintenance of equipment and supplies.
  • Ensures the continuous assessment and improvement of quality patient care. Ensures the safety of patients and employees by providing sufficient training on all equipment and procedures and maintaining clinical proficiency of all staff. Participation in departmental and hospital programs for Quality Assessment and Improvement and working with department management to improve the services provided.

  • Responsible for development of patient-focused unit(s) budget. Assures patient-focused unit(s) deliver quality within budgetary guidelines. Works with staff to coordinate care with health care providers of all disciplines to achieve patient care goals. Assesses and evaluates patient care needs, personnel needs and departmental needs to increase productivity of the unit. Reconciles echocardiography studies done to charges entered into Epic.
  • Provides leadership and direction for interviewing and selection of patient care team members. Prepares and conducts employee performance after probationary period and annually. Participates in the guidance and counseling of employee work performance.
  • Plans echocardiography schedule with 24-hour call coverage. Maintain direct reports Kronos.
  • Interprets and enforces hospital and departmental policies, provides information for standards review and revision.
  • Develops, supports, and facilitates hospital direction and goals. Contributes to professional growth and development of patient care team by identifying educational resources and opportunities with regard to echosonography services to patients. Applies supervisory skills in a fair, consistent, and objective manner. Collaborates with patient care team to monitor, evaluate and improve the patient care delivery system to increase customer satisfaction and echo sonographer productivity.
  • Assumes responsibilities for the echosonography Quality Assurance program; initiates changes in delivery of care in accordance with results of QA monitors and evaluates the effectiveness of the change process. Assists in the planning, development, implementation and evaluation of policies, procedures and new services.
  • Qualifications:
    • Associates degree required
    • RCCS or RDCS (PE) Required
    • Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification through the American Heart Association is required
    • * Both credentials must be maintained in active status.
    • Minimum three years of echo sonography experience is required.
    • Leadership experience is preferred
    • RDCS (preferred) with Fetal certification
