Pharmacy Service Leadership
The incumbent provides administrative, clinical, and programmatic leadership for the Clinical Pharmacy Service to ensure achievement of the clinical, research, and education goals and applicable performance measures. The incumbent is accountable for the delivery of all health care by the staff of the Pharmacy Service. Responsibilities include planning, directing, staffing, coordinating, and controlling a full range of pharmaceutical services or inpatient and outpatient patient care services.
The incumbent is responsible to the Chief of Pharmacy Service, and may perform other duties as needed and assigned in other areas as deemed necessary by the Chief of Pharmacy to maintain the consistency of overall Pharmacy services.
Operations:
Clinical Practice (generally 25% of regularly assigned daily duties)
- Functions as a clinical pharmacy practitioner (CPP) with a scope of practice.
- Provides pharmaceutical care to optimize patient response and response utilization in a pharmacy practice area.
- Maintains effective clinical pharmacy programs for operational efficiency and from a cost benefit and patient outcome perspective
- Coordinates the development of patient care interactive programs such as medication counseling, medication chart reviews, laboratory drug level reviews, specialized clinics and primary consultations.
- Facilitates the development of efficient and effective drug monitoring programs.
- Manages the maintenance of a Medical Center Drug Formulary in accordance with Veteran's Health Administration (VHA) and Veterans Integrated Service Network (VISN) policies and regulations. Ensures compliance with all VHA and VISN directives and guidelines concerning the Drug Formulary.
Administrative:
- Is the direct front-line supervisor over the clinical pharmacy practitioners and clinical pharmacy supervisor(s).
- Be visible, available and accessible to clinical staff. Addresses staff's needs and patient care matters timely.
- Provides clinical coverage, addresses patient needs, patient appointments as needed for direct reports' absences.
- Provides coverage when other section of the pharmacy in staffing shortage due to call-outs.
- Works with all Pharmacy front-line supervisors to assure smooth transition of Pharmacy services in all areas are coordinated between all sections.
- Interviews employee candidates, recommends appointments, advancement and all promotions or disciplinary action to the Chief of Pharmacy.
- Conduct daily huddles with clinical staff and weekly leadership rounding to ensure consistent quality and safe patient care and operations; and address issues timely.
- Coordinates the development of and maintains an effective personnel evaluation program.
- Serves as a dedicated member of local, VISN, and or national committees, being a positive representative of the Wilmington VA Pharmacy Department.
- Accepts assignments for ad hoc committees, teams and work groups to assist the facility.
- Plays a role in budgetary planning and execution.
- Maintains effective channels of communications with persons both within and outside the organization.
- Coordinates the development of monitors for continuous quality improvement and medication usage evaluation under The Joint Commission and Pharmacy Service guidelines. Approves all methodology and reporting criteria, making changes when necessary.
- The incumbent follows The Joint Commission, Office of Inspector General and VHA guidelines, keeping current with the development and analysis.
- Assures that assigned administrative projects and reports are submitted in a timely fashion and reports are well arranged easily understood and are submitted in the proper format in final form.
- Coordinates with the Chief of Pharmacy and pharmacy informatics in overseeing security for the pharmacy.
- Works collaboratively with pharmacy team members and leaders to accomplish the Pharmacy Service goals, Facility goals and the VA missions.
