Trust Officer

Bessemer’s Delaware bank (“BTDel”) has an opening for a Trust Officer in its Wilmington office. The office supports Ultra High Net Worth clients, and has grown since its formation in 2004, to administer more than 1,800 trusts with over $150 billion in assets under supervision. As a result of Delaware’s unique trust laws and the related unusual assets held in these trusts, the work is heavily transactional.

The ideal candidate would be comfortable with complex transactional work and be amenable to learning advanced concepts in tax law.

• Review governing instruments (e.g. trust agreements, amendments, wills, codicils, court orders, nonjudicial settlement and modification agreements, instruments of decanting) and prepare trust summaries.
• Review sophisticated transaction documents and draft related Direction Letters.
• Serve as an in‑house resource for trust administration questions – offering guidance on actions that may/may not be permissible under the trust’s terms, identifying solutions for various trust administration questions, identifying and applying appropriate state and/or federal law to given situations
• Coach and support Bessemer’s Client Advisory teams (relationship managers) to ensure proper trust administration through the many phases of each trust’s life cycle.
• Implement special projects in support of department and fiduciary risk management initiatives.
• Participate actively in BTDel and / or firm‑wide projects and committee assignments as such opportunities are identified.
• Contact with clients, outside, counsel, and external family offices is limited and on an as‑needed basis.

• J.D. required; one license to practice law preferred (Delaware law license not required)
• Excellent attention to detail and analytical skills
• Strong sense of judgment, including the capacity to assess and mitigate risk
• Effective organizational skills – must be effective at juggling competing priorities in a fast‑paced office, and adaptable to changing facts and circumstances
• Must be curious and eager to learn new concepts
• Must be a team player showing both collaborative spirit and willingness to accept constructive feedback
• Excellent communication skills and the ability to effectively explain legal and administrative concepts
• Experience in trust administration or estate planning desirable, though we will train the right candidate
• Effective computer skills: proficiency with Microsoft Word and Excel; familiarity with PowerPoint; comfortable learning new software packages (banking‑related)
