Director of Retail Operations

Purpose

The Director of Retail Operations assists the Vice President of Donated Goods Retail in developing and implementing strategic priorities across DGR. The role improves retail and operation efficiencies, increases production, and optimizes profitability to support Goodwill’s mission while executing high‑impact initiatives that drive operational excellence and growth.

Essential Functions
  • Partner with DGR leadership to develop and implement plans for production and sales of products to meet sales and cost objectives.
  • Identify and implement process improvements and standard operating procedures related to inventory management, supply chain, and store merchandising, enhancing customer experience and driving revenue growth.
  • Assist DGR management with developing people to consistently improve productivity.
  • Foster a culture of innovation by analyzing market trends, technologies, and best practices to guide strategic initiatives and identify key opportunities for operational improvement.
  • Collaborate with transportation and warehouse operations to ensure retail needs are met.
  • Participate in monthly financial reviews, analyze financial data, and develop action plans to boost profitability.
  • Use key donated goods retail metrics to measure the effectiveness of retail operations.
  • Develop and execute a portfolio of projects supporting DGR’s strategic objectives, creating detailed project plans, timelines, budgets, and risk management strategies.
  • Lead cross‑functional teams through all phases of project life cycles from planning to execution and post‑implementation review.
  • Monitor project progress and performance, using data‑driven insights to adjust strategies as needed.
  • Maintain up‑to‑date knowledge of regulations related to the resale of donated goods.
  • Attend meetings, training sessions, and committee/team activities as required.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Education and Experience

Bachelor’s degree and at least 5 years of progressive multi‑unit retail management experience. Experience at a Goodwill organization is preferred; an equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

Skills and Abilities
  • Strong financial acumen with experience in budgeting, forecasting, analysis, and P&L management.
  • Proven track record of successfully driving operational improvements and managing change in a dynamic retail environment.
  • Ability to translate business objectives into actionable operational plans.
  • Strategic thinking skills with the ability to analyze complex data, handle ambiguity, and make informed decisions.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, capable of interacting with a diverse constituent population.
  • Computer literacy and proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite or similar tools.
  • Capacity for frequent travel between Goodwill locations and willingness to work evenings/weekends.
  • Ability to work in a fast‑paced environment while maintaining attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Customer‑focused mindset with a strong commitment to delivering high‑quality service.
Working Conditions

Employees frequently encounter mechanical parts and moderate noise. Reasonable accommodations may be provided for individuals with disabilities. Required personal protective equipment includes hand protection and eye protection when handling materials, among other safety gear.

Physical Activities and Requirements

Tasks include fine finger dexterity, talking and speaking to convey information, visual acuity for close details and color vision, physical strength for standing, walking, reaching, talking, hearing, occasional stooping or kneeling, and lifting or moving up to 50 pounds.
