Registered Nurse-Wound Care

Summary

This position is located at the Wilmington VA Medical Center for Wound Care. The Wound Care Registered Nurse (RN) executes responsibilities that demonstrate leadership, experience, and creative approaches to the management of complex wound care patients. The RN serves as an expert clinician and patient/resident advocate in wound management.

• English language proficiency: must be competent in basic written and spoken English.
• Graduate of a U.S. nursing school approved by the appropriate accrediting agency (ACEN or CCNE) or a foreign nursing graduate with current, full, active, and unrestricted registration recognized by VA.
• Certification: acceptable credentials include WCC, CWON, or WOCN; willingness to obtain these credentials is preferred.
• Relevant education:
  Certificate, Associate Degree (ADN), Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN), Master of Science in Nursing (MSN), or related field doctorate. See grade and level requirements above.
• Preferred experience:
  
  outpatient wound care, ostomy, management of chronic wounds such as diabetic ulcers, pressure injuries, venous ulcers, and surgical wounds; knowledge of wound assessment, staging, debridement assistance, dressing selection, and negative pressure wound therapy.
• Physical requirements:
  
  visual acuity, keen hearing, clear speech, manual dexterity, ability to walk, stand, stoop, sit, bend, pull, lift, and push for extended periods.

• Collaborate with the wound care team in a wound clinic setting.
• Manage and treat inpatient, outpatient, and telewound consults, including STAT consults from acute care.
• Ensure daily operations in the nurse/wound clinic run smoothly and provide education to veterans and their families on health promotion and illness prevention.
• Adapt to changing populations and work with a variety of providers.
• Gather data, assess and utilize appropriate nursing judgment, and evaluate responses to actual or potential health problems.
• Follow up with telephone services, teaching, referral services, provision of care, and execute medical treatments and orders in a timely fashion.
• Provide interventions such as injections, self‑injection education, compression stockings, and dressing changes.
• Recognize urgent intervention needs and act accordingly.
• Operate autonomously and self‑directed, seeking supervisory direction when appropriate.
• Lead the group by example, demonstrating leadership in delivering and improving holistic care through collaboration with all disciplines.
