Position: SIGNAL ELECTRICIAN CDL “B” LICENSE

Overview

The City of Wilmington is seeking a Signal Electrician within the Department of Public Works. The position performs preventive and corrective maintenance of electrical systems, ensuring safety requirements and operating standards are met. The incumbent reports to the Traffic Maintenance Foreman. This is an open competitive position.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Installation and maintenance of electrical traffic controllers, devices, and related equipment for the traffic system network.
  • Installs and maintains telecommunication equipment used by the DelDOT Traffic Management Center (TMC) to communicate with City intersections.
  • Maintains traffic signals, pedestrian signals, and street lighting. Prepares material lists, maintenance reports, and records.
  • Reports reconnection of wireless routers and replacement of traffic controllers to DelDOT TMC personnel.
  • Installs and maintains Siemens M60 controllers, load switches, conflict monitors, traffic signal terminal facilities, and cabinets. Replaces malfunctioning controllers and monitors. Locates short and open circuit conditions in wiring systems in traffic control devices and streetlight fixtures. Prepares maintenance reports.
  • Installs and maintains signal heads, cables, span wire, traffic signal poles, and pedestals.
  • Uses technical judgment to determine work methods and procedures; takes assignments orally or in writing.
  • Supervises laborers and lower-classification maintenance employees by providing instruction, inspecting work, and coaching as needed.
  • Performs electronics repair work on a wide variety of equipment; reads schematics and manuals to isolate malfunctions. Work is subject to periodic review.
  • Meets with contractors to provide information regarding work setup not typically performed by City employees.
  • Installs signs as necessary.
  • On-call 24 hours per day on a rotational basis.
  • Performs related work as required.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Highest level of education required:
Graduation from high school or GED. Related coursework or experience in mechanical and electrical/electronic maintenance in traffic, transportation, or related electrical field preferred. Possess an electrical license or equivalent knowledge and service, electronic certification, and IMSA Traffic Signal Technician certifications.

  • Knowledge: Installation, maintenance, and repair of traffic control devices and related test equipment.
  • Skills: Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Abilities: Ability to keep and develop printed and computerized records; read and interpret schematic diagrams and logic charts.
  • Licenses: Valid driver’s license with a good driving record; CDL “B” with a good driving record; ability to pass DOT drug screening for CDL drivers.
WORKING CONDITIONS AND

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

All selected applicants must pass a criminal background check, pre-employment physical, and drug screen.

  • Physical Requirements: Frequent use of hands; ability to lift up to 25 lbs occasionally and up to 100 lbs with assistance; capable of climbing, bending, and reaching as needed.
  • Vision: Close, distance, color, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
  • Working Conditions: Regular outdoor work, inclement weather, near moving parts, exposure to wet/humid conditions, fumes, and potential electrical hazards.
  • Location and Schedule: Standard hours 5:30 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.; may require weekends, nights, or on-call; travel between sites as necessary.

Compensation includes salary administration and a comprehensive benefits package.
