Mobile Diesel Technician Level II

Overview

We serve customers using our 50+ service centers and a mobile fleet that performs scheduled maintenance, accident repair, painting, refurbishment, and heavy mechanical repair, supported by a 24/7 call center.

Cox Fleet by Cox Automotive is currently hiring a Mobile Diesel Technician Level II to perform licensed DOT inspections, preventative maintenance inspections, light and follow‑up repairs, light mechanical/hydraulic/electrical and electronic diagnostics, and other duties as assigned. The role includes advanced diagnostics under the supervision of a Senior Mobile Diesel Technician or higher. A successful candidate will comply with all company policies and achieve high performance metrics.

Responsibilities
  • Perform scheduled preventative maintenance ("PM"), DOT inspections and follow‑up repairs on light, medium and heavy‑duty vehicles in a mobile/field environment.
  • Perform minor adjustments and repairs on various truck equipment including electrical, brake, cooling systems, starters, alternators, fans, clutches, engine electronics, diesel steering systems, engines, transmissions, clutches and differentials.
  • Diagnose, adjust and repair various truck equipment including electrical, brake, cooling systems, starters, alternators, air‑conditioning systems, fan clutches, engine electronics, diesel steering systems, engines, transmissions, clutches and differentials.
  • Inspect, test and listen to defective equipment to diagnose malfunctions using test instruments such as handheld computers and pressure gauges.
  • Road test vehicles to diagnose malfunctions and ensure proper operation.
  • Identify problems, determine accuracy and relevance of information, using sound judgment to generate and evaluate alternatives.
  • Independently manage parts inventory and equipment on a company‑issued service truck and perform periodic reconciliation.
  • Maintain and operate company‑issued service vehicle, conduct safety checks, and perform pre‑/post‑trip inspections.
  • Work with and listen effectively to clients and customers to assess needs, provide information or assistance, resolve problems, or satisfy expectations.
  • Manage concurrent assigned tasks, prioritizing work related activities and time allocations.
  • Use hand tools, precision instruments, diesel tools, welding equipment, lifts and jacks.
  • Document work according to company standards, upload pictures of work performed, parts used, and findings observed on Repair Orders ("RO") using a company‑issued iOS device and our proprietary TRAIT application.
  • Accurately complete DOT forms and all other forms of documentation in a timely fashion.
  • Work with a high degree of independence and manage own daily schedule.
  • Maintain a high level of productivity and work within or close to most Standard Repair Times.
  • Obtain parts from approved local and national vendors as necessary for repairs.
  • Communicate with management and support team via email or phone to obtain approvals on repair estimates, retrieve purchase order numbers and discuss RO findings.
  • Perform all work in compliance with organizational safety, health and environmental policies, and federal regulations, including OSHA, EPA and DOT.
Requirements
  • High School Diploma/GED and 3 years’ experience in a related field. The right candidate could also have a different combination, such as a higher degree or certification beyond a high school diploma/​GED, or 5 years’ experience.
  • Possess and supply a set of hand tools necessary to perform job duties.
  • Obtain Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certification T8 (PMI) within eighteen (18) months.
  • Must complete DOT‑regulated pre‑employment background screening and DOT physical prior to employment.
  • A current and valid DOT medical card with more than four (4) months remaining may be submitted in lieu of a DOT physical.
  • Must be at least 21 years or older.
  • Valid driver’s license required; must hold a valid state‑of‑residence driver’s license and be able to obtain and maintain a Driver Qualification File.
