Position: HVAC Mechanic II - 7:30a-4p - Wilmington

Location

Wilmington, Delaware, at Wilmington and Christiana Hospitals.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Operate, maintain, and repair all heating, ventilation, and air conditioning equipment including steam and hot water heating systems, chilled water and direct expansion cooling systems.
  • Operate, maintain, and repair ice machines, packaged refrigerators/freezers, walk‑in refrigerators/freezers, and other cooling and refrigeration equipment.
  • Operate and maintain pneumatic/electronic temperature/humidity control systems (thermostats, valves, dampers, transmitters, controllers, switches, sensors).
  • Operate and maintain chillers for comfort or process cooling systems, including associated cooling towers.
  • Answer complaints about equipment operation, temperature, and/or humidity.
  • Respond to emergency situations such as power failures and fire alarms to restore equipment.
  • Maintain clean and safe work areas.
  • Assist in training HVAC apprentice mechanics and evaluate performance.
  • Follow all safety procedures in performance of job responsibilities.
  • Report unsafe activities, conditions, hazards, or safety violations to supervisor.
  • Read blueprints and schematics.
  • Perform other related duties as required.
Hours

Day shift 7:30 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. – On‑Call alternating weeks, weekends, holidays.

Education and Experience Requirements
  • High School graduate or equivalent.
  • Four years relevant HVAC experience.
  • Journeyman certification, or Master HVAC/R license, or military HVAC/R specialist experience.
Special Requirements
  • Maintain EPA certification for working with CFC, HCFC, HFC refrigerants Level I and Level II under Section 608 of the Clean Air Act.
  • Obtain respiratory medical clearance and wear a half‑face air purifying respirator or power air purifying respirator (PAPR).
Physical Demands

Strenuous work associated with direct HVAC system repair, including operating chain falls and large wrenches, climbing cooling towers, boiler tops, ladder work, and bending and stooping over equipment.

Working Conditions
  • Exposure to oils, grease, hot surfaces, chemical fumes, soot, dust, dirt, extreme heat, cold, and noise.
  • Exposure to burns, scalds, eye and ear hazards, and falls.
  • Exposure to cramped and confined areas, and danger of infection.
Compensation

Starting rate of $35.12 per hour, regardless of prior experience. After six months of continuous employment, hourly rate increases to $39.43. After one year, increases to $43.73.
