Christiana Care is seeking a full‑time HVAC Mechanic II to operate, maintain, and repair all heating, ventilating, and air conditioning equipment at the Wilmington and Christiana Hospitals.
Duties and Responsibilities- Operate, maintain, and repair all heating, ventilation, and air conditioning equipment, including steam and hot water heating systems, chilled water and direct expansion cooling systems.
- Operate, maintain, and repair ice machines, packaged refrigerators/freezers, walk‑in refrigerators/freezers and other cooling and refrigeration equipment.
- Operate and maintain pneumatic/electronic temperature/humidity control systems – thermostats, valves, dampers, transmitters, controllers, switches, and sensors.
- Operate and maintain chillers for comfort or process cooling systems and associated cooling towers.
- Respond to complaints about equipment operation, temperature, and/or humidity in all areas of the hospital and handle emergency situations such as power failures and fire alarms to restore equipment.
- Maintain clean and safe work areas at all times.
- Assist in training HVAC apprentice mechanics and evaluate performance.
- Follow all applicable safety procedures and report any unsafe activities or hazards in a timely manner.
- Read blueprints and schematics.
- Perform other related duties as required.
Day shift 7:30 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. – On‑call alternating weeks, weekends, and holidays.
Education and Experience Requirements- High School graduate or equivalent.
- Four years of relevant HVAC experience.
- Journeyman certification, Master HVAC/R license, or military HVAC/R specialist experience.
- Maintain EPA certification for working with CFC, HCFC, HFC refrigerants (Level I and Level II) under Section 608.
- Obtain Respiratory Medical Clearance and be able to wear a half‑face Air Purifying Respirator or Power Air Purifying Respirator (PAPR).
Strenuous work associated with direct HVAC system repair, including operating chain falls and large wrenches, climbing cooling towers, boiler tops, ladder work, and bending and stooping over equipment.
Working ConditionsExposure to oils, grease, hot surfaces, chemical fumes, soot, dust, dirt, extreme heat, cold, and noise. Potential for burns, scalds, eye and ear hazards, and falls. Work may occur in cramped and confined areas with risk of infection.

This position has a starting rate of $35.12 per hour, regardless of prior experience. After six months of continuous employment, the hourly rate will automatically increase to $39.43 per hour. After one year of continuous employment, the hourly rate will automatically increase to $43.73 per hour. This pay range represents Christiana Care's good faith and reasonable estimate of compensation at the time of posting.
The actual salary within this range offered to a successful candidate will depend on individual factors including, without limitation, skills, relevant experience, and qualifications as they relate to specific job requirements.
