The City of Wilmington, a leading Delaware employer, provides the City's sanitation, recycling, street cleaning, water, and transportation services through the Department of Public Works. The department offers a wide array of services, including weekly recycling and residential solid waste collection, treatment and distribution of high quality drinking water, collection and treatment of sewage, stormwater management, street sweeping, paving and repairs, traffic sign and signal maintenance, line striping, rodent control, snow removal, and fleet and property maintenance.
DUTIESAND RESPONSIBILITIES
The Sanitation Worker works alongside the Sanitation Driver to collect waste and recyclable materials from residential areas. The Sanitation Worker, also referred to as a Chucker, reports to the Assistant Sanitation Supervisor.
Additional responsibilities include:
- Collects refuse on designated routes and dumps it onto the truck.
- Operates a hoisting device to raise refuse bins and dump contents into an enclosed truck.
- Operates a compactor or packer to collect solid waste and refuse.
- Occasionally performs tasks requiring hand tools.
- Performs semi-skilled tasks on a relief or emergency basis.
- Ensures all equipment is clean and in working order.
- Performs all related work as required.
Graduation from high school or GED equivalency, or an equivalent combination of experience and training that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
- Knowledge – Ability to perform semi-skilled and skilled manual tasks without close supervision; knowledge of proper handling and disposal of hazardous materials following safety guidelines.
- Skills – Experience in heavy manual labor related to general sanitation duties, customer service skills, and ability to understand oral and written instructions.
- Abilities – Ability to lift heavy objects and perform heavy manual labor for extended periods, walk for prolonged periods in hot and cold weather, work without close supervision, and establish effective working relationships with other employees.
- Licenses – Maintain a valid driver’s license with a good driving record preferred.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
All selected applicants must pass a criminal background investigation, drug test, and pre‑employment physical.
- Regularly works near moving mechanical parts and in outside weather conditions.
- Frequently lifts or moves up to 50–100 pounds.
- Frequently works in highly precarious places, exposed to vibration and loud noise.
- Regularly required to reach with hands and arms; frequently required to stand, walk, and use hands to operate objects, tools, or controls; occasionally required to sit, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl and talk or hear.
Compensation encompasses salary administration and a comprehensive benefits package.
