DEFINITION
To perform a variety of duties in the operation, maintenance, and repair of the ship engine room gear and machinery, both ashore and at sea. (Gear and machinery include the main propulsion engine, the electrical system (generator engines, wiring, batteries, etc.) Air compressors, pumps and piping, refrigeration and air conditioning systems, and hydraulic system (with associated deck winches, A-frames, and steering motors)).
SUPERVISIONRECEIVED AND EXERCISED
- Receives general supervision from the Ship’s Captain
- Exercises no supervision.
Essential and other important responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS- Stand engine room watches on the College’s sea training vessel on student training voyages and research voyages, contracted by outside agencies, a minimum of 76 days per year
- Assist instructors in the operation of deck machinery and scientific equipment on sea training voyages.
- Assist in the maintenance and repair of diesel engines and related vessel systems used in the College’s fleet of small vessels.
- Perform additional machinery maintenance and repair as necessary, as directed by the Chief Engineer.
- Assume the duties of the Chief Engineer in the event that the Chief Engineer is on leave or for any other reason unable to perform his duties or serve on a ship voyage.
- Respond to student questions as appropriate.
- Observe students to ensure adherence to safe measures.
- Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.

- Maintain and repair marine engines and equipment.
- Analyze problems, identify alternative solutions, project consequences of proposed actions and implement recommendations in support of goals.
- Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
- Interpret and apply CFCC goals, objectives, policies, procedures, rules, and regulations.
- Interpret and apply Federal, State and local policies, procedures, laws and regulations.
- Maintain effective audio‑visual discrimination and perception needed for:
- Making observations

- Operating assigned equipment
- Handling varied tasks simultaneously
- Maintain physical condition appropriate to the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities, which may include the following:

- Bending, stooping, climbing, or lifting up to 50 pounds
- Working in confined spaces
- Working under harsh weather conditions

Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
MINIMUM EDUCATION/ TRAINING- High school diploma or equivalency supplemented by marine diesel engineering training; knowledge of the operation, maintenance and repair of ship propulsion diesel engines and other ship systems.
A combination of at least two years of underway engineering experience in the operation and maintenance of a machinery plant on a seagoing or inland diesel powered vessel, or heavy diesel repair or similar training.
PREFERRED EDUCATION/ TRAINING, EXPERIENCE, SKILLS- Experience in welding is preferred
