The MEMS Group located in Wilmington, MA is seeking an IMU Design Evaluation Engineer to serve as a product development owner and characterization expert for MEMS-based inertial measurement units. This role combines end-to-end IMU ownership with hands-on evaluation, enabling rapid iteration between design, validation, and productization.

In addition to new product development, this engineer supports sustaining efforts for released IMUs, including performance monitoring, issue investigation, and continuous improvement.

The ideal candidate brings strong technical judgment, is comfortable making trade-offs, and can translate complex data into clear product decisions.

Key Responsibilities

  • Own IMU development from concept through release.
  • Define and execute characterization strategies to evaluate IMU performance across environmental and dynamic conditions.
  • Design and develop test setups (temperature, vibration, shock).
  • Analyze data to understand performance drivers, validate models, and identify root causes of errors.
  • Support sustaining engineering, including failure analysis, yield trends, and continuous improvement.
  • Partner with manufacturing and quality teams to resolve production issues and implement corrective actions.
  • Serve as a technical interface to customers, including supporting escalations and communicating findings.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally to ensure product performance and readiness.

Qualifications

  • Master's or PhD in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field.
  • ~5+ years of experience in IMU or MEMS inertial sensor development.
  • Experience owning or driving sensor/IMU development and/or sustaining engineering.
  • Strong understanding of inertial sensor performance (e.g., bias, noise, stability).
  • Hands-on experience with test equipment such as vibration systems, shock testers, rate tables, centrifuges, thermal chambers, and similar.
  • Experience with test automation and instrumentation interfaces.
  • Proficiency in data analysis and programming tools (MATLAB, Python, Lab View, or equivalent).
  • Familiarity with DOE methods, statistical analysis, and reliability testing.
  • Strong cross-functional collaboration and communication skills.
