Construction Controller

Location:

Wilmington, NC

Tribute is seeking a Construction Controller to strengthen reporting, project controls, cost visibility, and process discipline across a multifamily construction portfolio. This is not a traditional accounting controller role. It is a senior construction operations role for someone with strong financial fluency, sound judgment, and the ability to improve clarity and accountability without creating unnecessary disruption.

We build roughly $100 million annually, typically across three active multifamily projects ranging from $20 million to $60 million and approximately 150 to 450 units. As we continue to grow, we are looking for a seasoned operator who can help leadership get better information, improve consistency across projects, and bring more rigor to forecasting, cost control, and operational follow‑through.

This role is designed to begin with ownership of processes and reporting, with strong leadership growth potential over time based on performance, fit, and credibility.

What you'll do
  • Improve the quality, consistency, and usefulness of project reporting
  • Strengthen cost visibility, forecasting discipline, and operational dashboards
  • Review commitments, buyout discipline, and cost‑control practices
  • Support estimating, takeoff review, and cost validation where needed
  • Identify blind spots, weak follow‑through, and inconsistencies in project information
  • Help leadership get clearer, faster, and more reliable information from PMs and superintendents
  • Improve process discipline across project teams and help bridge information gaps between construction, development, and other internal stakeholders
What this role is

This is a hands‑on leadership role for a construction professional who is comfortable in both the numbers and the realities of job execution. The right person will be able to pressure‑test assumptions, spot weak explanations, and improve accountability through stronger systems and better reporting.

What we are looking for

The strongest candidates will likely come from backgrounds such as Project Executive, Director of Project Controls, Director of Construction Operations, or a senior project leadership role with strength in forecasting, job cost, buyout, and operational discipline. Candidates from respected regional or national builders with meaningful multifamily experience will be especially attractive.

You should have
  • A strong construction operations background
  • Solid understanding of job cost, forecasting, commitments, buyout, and reporting
  • Enough estimating or takeoff fluency to validate assumptions and pressure‑test numbers
  • Experience improving process and accountability, not just working inside existing systems
  • The ability to work across departments and communicate well with senior leadership
  • The maturity and credibility to work effectively with both office and field teams
  • Willingness to be based in Wilmington, NC
Preferred background
  • Multifamily construction experience
  • Experience with a respected regional or national builder
  • Prior exposure to both office and field dynamics
  • Familiarity with the Southeast construction environment
  • Military background or another high‑discipline leadership background
  • Strong presence and maturity without ego
What this role offers

This is a broad, high‑impact role with meaningful exposure to both the financial and operational side of the business. It is designed for a construction professional who wants to step into a position with immediate influence over reporting, project controls, cost visibility, and process discipline across a significant multifamily portfolio. The right person will have the opportunity to build credibility quickly, work closely with senior leadership, and grow into broader leadership responsibilities over time.

For someone with strong judgment, operational maturity, and leadership ability, this role offers a clear path to increased influence and long‑term advancement within the company.

  • Employer‑Paid Short‑Term Disability
  • 401(k) Retirement Planning: 3% full match + 50% match on 4%‑5%.
  • 20% Employee Rental Discount.
  • 11 Paid Holidays (including a Floating Holiday of your choice), Vacation & Sick Time.
  • Welcome Child Stipend
  • $50,000 Group‑Term Life Insurance & Long‑Term Disability.
  • Additional Insurance Options available.
  • Job Site completion bonuses
  • Additional Support:
Company vehicle, per diem, and housing
