Brief Summary of Work for this PositionThe Assistant Director of Student Accounts provides strategic and operational leadership for the University's student billing, accounts receivable, third‑party billing, tuition waiver administration, payment plans, refund operations, and specialized student financial programs. Reporting to the Director of Student Accounts and University Cashiers, this position is responsible for directing complex student financial operations, supervising professional staff, ensuring compliance with federal, state, UNC System, and University regulations, and maintaining the integrity of student financial records and institutional receivables.
The Assistant Director serves as the department's senior operational authority for student billing, tuition assessment, third-party billing, military education benefits, payment plan administration, tuition waivers, and student account administration. The position independently administers multiple financial programs requiring advanced accounting knowledge, interpretation of federal and state regulations, financial analysis, and sound professional judgment.
The position supervises the Billing, Refunding, and Third-Party Billing teams while establishing operational priorities, monitoring performance, strengthening internal controls, developing policies and procedures, and leading continuous process improvement initiatives. The Assistant Director collaborates extensively with Financial Aid, the Registrar, Information Technology Services, Enrollment Management, Human Resources, General Accounting, academic departments, and external agencies to ensure accurate billing, regulatory compliance, operational efficiency, and exceptional customer service.
As a member of the Student Accounts and University Cashiers leadership team, the Assistant Director provides strategic guidance to the Director regarding operational effectiveness, regulatory compliance, financial risk, organizational planning, and continuous improvement that supports the University's financial stewardship and student success.
Minimum Education and Experience RequirementsMasters degree with 5+ years of relevant experience or a Bachelors degree with at least 1 year of supervisory experience and 6+ years of relevant experience.
Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills & Experience- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Accounting, Business Administration, Finance, or a closely related field.
