The NC Department of Adult Correction is one of the largest state agencies with more than 14,000 employees. It is responsible for safeguarding and preserving lives and property through prevention, protection, and preparation as well as the care, custody, and supervision of all adults sentenced for violating North Carolina laws. This department includes state prisons with custody, healthcare, and facility operations staff as well as probation/parole officers who supervised sentenced people in the community.

Description of Work

This position is located at Craven Correctional Institution in Vanceboro, NC, Craven County. The prison is a Medium Custody Adult Male Felon Diagnostic Processing Center which houses 850 offenders. Employees in this class handle the initial interviewing and processing of the offenders entering the prison system.

Key Duties
  • Responsible for collecting data from the NCIC (National Crime Information Center) prior the offenders arrival.
  • Preparing written reports and forms after gathering socioeconomic information, education, substance abuse history, etc. during the interview with the offender.
  • Responsible for explaining terms of the sentence and providing general orientation to prison processes and procedures.
  • Read and interpret legal documents effectively and accurately.
  • Perform crisis intervention and routine counseling including suicide prevention with the ability to recognize abnormal behavior and take appropriate actions in accordance with established procedures.
  • Recording data and setting up the offender field jacket before passing it on to a Case Analyst for processing.
Salary Range

$31,200 - $51,249

Candidates now meet the minimum qualifications of a position if they meet the minimum education and experience listed on the vacancy announcement. The Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs)/ Management Preferences are not required. Applicants who possess the following skills are preferred:

About The Division of Institutions

The Division of Institutions manages the daily operations of all state-operated prison facilities across North Carolina. Facilities are categorized by custody levels (minimum, medium, close) and house individuals serving sentences for felony convictions. The division provides safety, security, and rehabilitative services through trained custody staff, program facilitators, and administrative personnel.
