Customer Service Rep, Retail Associate/ Customer Service
Primary responsibility is to take excellent care of our customers by satisfying each customer’s needs, exceeding their expectations, and making every shopping visit a pleasant and satisfying experience. This requires accurately and efficiently operating the cash register and maintaining security and control of all funds in the cash register.
Harris Teeter’s associates represent the company to customers and the public. One of the top business priorities is to assist any customer or potential customer. Nothing is more important than being courteous, friendly, helpful, and prompt in the attention given to customers.
Harris Teeter will provide training to all associates with extensive customer contact. If a customer wishes to make a specific comment or complaint that you cannot resolve, you are required to direct the person to the department manager or manager‑on‑duty for appropriate action.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES- Customer Service
- Your job performance must demonstrate the highest level of customer service. Never be rude to a customer under any circumstance.
- Follow through on customer requests. If you cannot say “yes,” bring in the manager‑on‑duty.
- Full focus must be on the customer and processing their order. Cheerfully invite customers into your line, make eye contact, smile, speak in a genuine, clear, and enthusiastic manner, greet every customer and accompanying family members (especially children), ask if they found everything they were looking for, tell the customer the total of their order, clearly count back change, call the customer by name if paying by check or if known, follow proper VIC card procedures and inform the customer of their VIC savings, and always say “Thank you for shopping with us today!”
- Maintain a professional appearance by following company dress and grooming standards.
- Be reliable and punctual. Report to work on time and notify supervisor or manager‑on‑duty at least two hours in advance if late.
- Operate the self‑checkout station, self‑checkout robots, and provide great customer service in an accurate, efficient manner. Assist customers with their groceries if needed, maintain security and cash control, and perform register maintenance duties.
- Comply with state and local ABC and tobacco laws and ensure strict enforcement.
- Communicate in English with customers and fellow associates regarding requests, promotions, and essential products. Inform management of any lack of advertised items, incorrect prices, missing signs, departmental changes, or other situations.
- Carefully bag groceries efficiently following company procedures. Cheerfully bag groceries the way the customer requests and place the order in the shopping cart.
- Perform fixed activities when business is light (sweeping, cleaning, blocking, straightening, etc.) and clean restrooms and other areas as directed.
- Keep the store clean, maintain hygiene standards, and comply with health department requirements.
- Follow safety regulations and help keep the store free of dangerous situations. Immediately inform store management of all accidents and/or safety hazards and record them in the designated log.
- Handle chemicals according to the Hazard Communication Program Manual.
- Provide assistance to fellow associates to complete their daily tasks and other duties as assigned.
- Adhere to company standards, policies, and procedures throughout scheduled hours.
- Age 16 or older.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Willingness to participate in and complete required training.
- Language skills: read and comprehend short instructions, simple memos in English; write simple correspondence in English; present information in one‑on‑one and small group situations to customers, clients, and associates who speak English.
- Mathematical skills: add and subtract two‑digit numbers, calculate discount percentages, and use American currency units.
- Reasoning ability: apply commonsense understanding to carry out detailed but uncomplicated written or oral instructions.
