The English department offers the Bachelor of Arts and the Master of Arts degrees in English as well as providing required instruction for both undergraduate and graduate students with other majors throughout UNCW. With its size and scope, the English department has more complex organizational structure than many within the College. The volume and diversity of work generated by the instructional, administrative, service and professional needs of faculty have required the office staff be given more duties to ensure maximum efficiency in departmental operations.

This History department offers the Bachelor of Arts and the Master of Arts degree in History. The purpose of the department is to provide each student in both degree programs with the means to achieve personal, academic, and career objectives by providing the necessary opportunities and resources to achieve those goals. In its wider mandate to serve the general student and the community, the purpose of the History department is the historical enrichment of the individual in preparation for lifelong appreciation and continuing study of history.
