Position Description

DEFINITION:

To provide classroom instruction to students through lecture, demonstration, laboratory exercises, handouts, responding to questions, and testing directly related to Fishing Gear, Industrial Skills, and Environmental Sampling; to maintain, repair, build, and replace all fisheries sampling gear (trawls, gill nets, cast nets, dredges, seines, etc.); and, the maintenance of shop equipment and shop spaces.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED:

  • Receives general supervision from Marine Technology Program Director.
  • May exercise functional and technical supervision over instructional assistants.
Duties & Responsibilities (Essential Functions)

ESSENTIAL AND OTHER IMPORTANT FUNCTIONS STATEMENTS:

Essential and other important responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to:

Essential Functions:

  • Serve as instructor and student supervisor during multiple training cruises aboard an ocean-going research vessel for trips up to 10-days per trip.
  • Provide classroom and laboratory instruction to students.
  • Prepare lesson plans and schedule classroom activities; develop, and prepare supplemental materials to enhance textbook lessons.
  • Develop and prepare tests to evaluate student performance; grade and record individual scores.
  • Act as an advisor and counselor to students; provide individual tutoring to students outside of the classroom as needed.
  • Provide classroom demonstrations on various lab and shop equipment and machinery; develop laboratory assignments to provide hands on experience as appropriate.
  • Participate in curriculum development, evaluation, and change; attend faculty meetings as required.
  • Maintain accurate records of student attendance, and performance; maintain other records and databases according to program needs or accreditation requirements.
  • Stay abreast of new developments, and changes in various academic fields; participate in staff development programs, workshops, seminars, and other continuing education programs as appropriate.
  • Oversee the implementation of policies and procedures related to required teaching area.
  • Participate on college committees and in other institutional activities and programs.

Other Important Functions:

  • Participate in various activities and operations of the Marine Technology Program; work in the laboratory, classroom, shop and on field trips and marine projects as assigned.
  • Fill in for other instructors as needed.
  • Assess the relevancy and impact of various lessons; revise and improve lesson format; evaluate various texts book and select books to be used for future classes.
  • Request and complete requisitions for repair and maintenance of equipment as needed.
  • Maintain inventory records.
  • Assist in the recruitment of students from community high schools and outreach events.
  • Oversee and participate in the field studies and assignment; travel with students to provide assistance and instruction as appropriate.
  • Participate in a variety of student related administrative activities including reviewing admission requirements, progress, and qualifications for graduation.
  • Demonstrate competence regarding the handling of hazardous substance such as blood borne pathogens; continually undergo training and train student in such procedures (required for all nursing faculties).
  • Demonstrate community involvement.
  • Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.
Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS:

Knowledge:

  • Marlin spike seamanship and principles of rope fibers and proper application in both fisheries and maritime applications.
  • Effective use and repair of a myriad of fishing gear types. Understanding of fishing gear deployment and retrieval aboard small boats.
  • Marine safety and seamanship techniques.
  • Principles of safety in an industrial shop setting.
  • Use of basic hand and power tools found in a standard wood shop.
  • Basic chemistry principles applicable to transformation and degradation processes of contaminants in the environment.
  • The principles of environmental assessment including the sources, transport, and fate of chemicals in the environment.
