DEFINITION:
To provide classroom instruction to student inmates at Pender County Correctional Center through lecture, demonstration, laboratory exercises, handouts, responding to questions, and testing. Provide instruction in all 5 areas of the HiSET exam, including language arts, writing, social studies, math and science. Must be familiar with Adult Basic Education curriculum and be able to keep accurate records.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED:- Receives direction from Director of Special Programs, ACR.
Essential and other important responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to:
Essential Functions:- Adhere to all guidelines, rules, policies and procedures of New Hanover Correctional Center.
- Provide classroom and laboratory instruction to students.
- Prepare lesson plans and schedule classroom activities; develop, and prepare supplemental materials to enhance textbook lessons.
- Develop and prepare tests to evaluate student performance; grade and record individual scores.
- Participate in curriculum development, evaluation, and change; attend faculty meetings as required.
- Maintain accurate records of student attendance, and performance; maintain other records and databases according to program needs or accreditation requirements.
- Stay abreast of new developments, and changes in various academic fields; participate in staff development programs, workshops, seminars, and other continuing education programs as appropriate.
- Oversee the implementation of policies and procedures related to required teaching area.
- Participate on college committees and in other institutional activities and programs.
- Fill in for other instructors as needed.
- Assess the relevancy and impact of various lessons; revise and improve lesson format; evaluate various text books and select books to be used for future classes.
- Participate in a variety of student related administrative activities includingprogress and qualifications for graduation or successful completion of program of study.
- Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.
Knowledge:
- Classroom and laboratory instructional techniques and procedures.
- Principles and procedures of academic and instructional program development and administration in the area of assignment.
- Current trends, research, and development in the area of assignment.
- Principles and procedures of record keeping.
- Principles and techniques involved in test development and administration.
- Pertinent Federal, State, and local laws, codes, and regulations.
- Interpret and apply college goals, objectives, policies, procedures, rules and regulations.
- Interpret and apply Federal, State and local policies, procedures, laws and regulations.
- Maintain effective audio-visual discrimination and perception needed for:
- making observations
- reading and writing
- communicating with others
- operating assigned equipment
- handling varied tasks simultaneously.
- Maintain physical condition appropriate to the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities which may include the following:
- standing or sitting for extended periods of time
- operating assigned equipment
- preparing and presenting instructional material.
- Maintain mental capacity, which allows the capability of:
- making sound decisions
- responding to questions
- demonstrating intellectual capabilities.
- Communicate clearly, and concisely, both orally and in writing.
- Establish and maintain cooperative-working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
Minimum Education /Training:- Bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited college or university.
Skills:
- One or more years of experience in an instructional setting as a teacher or tutor are preferred.
- One or more years of experience working in a correctional facility is preferred.
